Hi, A family member is looking into renting out her apartment.

She is apprehensive due to possible water usage abuse by future tenant.

The water usage is currently included with the levy statement.

Is it possible to convert to a prepaid water system before letting out the unit?

Thanks

You can get a plumber to do it for you but its not cheap.

How are you billed for water? Usually, at an apartment the entire water bill is divided by the number of units and is usually reflected in your levies. If you choose a prepaid meter and the rest of the complex does not choose that route, then you may be subsidizing others in the complex.

It is calculated on communal usage but I think each unit has a meter

I though all complexes and flats were socialist swines when it came to water.
depends on the vibe...

when you have a lot of owners renting out their units then it sways towards separate metres and even prepaid metres.

If each unit has a separate meter then it's pretty easy. You may install a prepaid meter after the normal meter, if memory serves me correct you may even do it outside of the median line (on the common property), provided that the pipe is for the exclusive use of your unit. But it won't hurt to inform the trustees of it in any case, they may know of other units that have done and experienced similar things, and the resulting info could possibly guide you further.

Yes you can. The body corperate installed prepaid water for the flats in our complex. I guess they(trustees) got tired of manually reading the meters.

So all the owners decided to install prepaid meters, that's what a body corporate is, all the owners of the units.
