Hi All,

I use a 3g router (tp-link mr3420) with Cell C dongle.

I have setup RDP many times to routers using telkom lines, but I cant reach the ip of my 3g router when using cellc.
If I tracert my dyndns (setup on the router + port forwarding etc.) it timed out after reaching 41.48.253.161

So my question is if it is at all possible to actually RDP using the cellc network to my router?

You will need to request a 'public apn' same as the one which Vodacom gives you, normally entails sending them a fax / emailed request.
This will allocate a public IP to your device, then you will just need to open firewall ports locally

If you just want to access your PC remotely, install teamviewer full and set up a permanent access code. No need to configure port forwarding or anything like that.

Mobile operators block unsolicited incoming traffic as you would throw a fit if your mobile data bill was sky high due to some Russian kid hacker trying to get access to your PC by RDP/SSH/wahtevering in to your PC. Remember you get charged for traffic up and down, so basically they need you to sign triplicate in blood so you can't haul them to ICASA/court when you get a huge bill due to someone attacking your IP address.

But with a prepaid data bundle you don't have that worry.

And it's easy to block pesky attacks - just switch back to the internet APN should you really need internet access without somebody being able to access your PC/device. :D

Quite easy with the right device and local access to it, not so easy when the point is to get remote access to your devices:( Doing that effectively cuts you off from your device. I know VC have another APN for mobile-to-mobile connections.

Another option is to get your 3G connected device to VPN to you if you have a public IP that is accessible by using DynDNS type services. Basically when you connect your machine will update the dyndns server and then your 3G connected device should be able to VPN to you and you can connect back via the VPN tunnel. Bit of a hack though, otherwise there are always services like logmein.com for example.
