Is it still called a braai if there is no dop (alcohol)?

Busy doing meat on the coals this afternoon but using eco logs which makes it then a BBQ.

Was now wondering would the same apply to a dop free grill? Is dop a crucial component like wood?

I've been 7 years 1 month without a drink and my braaing had never felt the same, so I feel "no".

Wood and coal are both fine in my opinion.

Gas is for camping or when you live somewhere that doesn't allow coal or wood fires.

A Braai (Capital letter) is a ritual, not just another way of cooking meat or food. Been to some of those just another way of cooking disappointments. Preparation and anticipation is key. Consumption of alcohol is a key feature of the ritual.
