A friend always chucks a full chicken on the braai as well, he says it allows him to smoke his cigar and have a few whiskeys, as mentioned, it's a way to relax, sit outside, socialize and just let your hair down.

A quick braai is such an anti-climax, like other things..

PS: But no, booze is not mandatory, but part of my ritual, even if it's one drink

Busy doing meat on the coals this afternoon but using eco logs which makes it then a BBQ.

Was now wondering would the same apply to a dop free grill? Is dop a crucial component like wood?

I've been 7 years 1 month without a drink and my braaing had never felt the same, so I feel "no".
Muslims braai so no, does not require a dop.

Also consider this, during the great trek the dutchmen would not have been able to carry dop with them. They also would have braai'ed every night so you can't have it both ways, dop is a luxuary at a braai. The key ingredient is the fire that should last long after the meat is cooked and should be started long before.

It can still be a braai. It's what you make it out to be. You can have an alcohol-free beverage. These days you get lots of options from beers to ciders, wine and even gin!

Why would they not be able to carry dop with them ?

How would they brew and store ? How would they be able to carry the things needed for brewing ?

I'm sure the majority of them would have packed grog but it would have run out in 5 mins.

You seen the size of an ossewa? how about 10 to 20 of them on a trek?
fermenting in a casket in the corner of your wagon is easy and when it's ready running a smallish pot still to distill it is just as easy.

if a braai as boeries, steak and pork or the other white meat (chicken you cannibals) I am happy, booze is optional.

No that's a BBQ.

A Braai is a social experience without required formality. And one part of that social experience includes dop.
