Is it worth it to keep paying for my tracking unit?

I just recently changed insurance. The new insurance company said that whether I have a tracker or not it won't change my profile as my car is low risk. In such a case's would it be wise to discontinue my tracker service and save on R200 p/m, or is it best to keep tracking subscription on?

Some insurance companies waiver your excess if your car gets stolen or hijack and you had a tracking device in it, others don't. I would say switch it off. I got a new car recently and will not put another tracking device in my car. I worked for a tracking company recovery team long enough to know what happens when it gets stolen or hijacked. Plus that thing just drains your battery when the car is standing a while. So if you won't pay much more on your premium then deactivate it.

If your premium doesn't go down by as much as the tracking cost (it won't unless you have a super expensive car, in which case you don't care about R200p/m) then leave it unless the car has particular sentimental value or something. It's likely you don't really want that car back in any case.

So your insurance premium won't go up if you don't have the tracker anymore, and your excesses will stay the same?

Ditch it.

Dump it. You don't really want a recovered, repaired ex-stolen car anyway.

I keep mine, because my wife takes my car out sometimes, and it gives me a fair amount of peace of mind knowing that if she breaks down anywhere, I'll be able to see exactly where. Or - god forbid - if she's hijacked, somebody at least stands a small chance of finding her.

Other times it's just because I'm parked in a dodgy area, and I'd like to know that my car is still where I left it ... a quick sms, and I know. *shrugs* To me, that's worth it. Plus Tracker is subsidised by going through Outsurance, so that makes it even easier to take.

Dump it. My friends car was recently stolen and the tracker didn't help at all.
