I have EDGE at 921.6kbps, but when I speak to America via SKYPE, it disconnects after about 30 secs. I know that MTN does not like SKYPE as it causes congestion on their net.

How can you connect with EDGE at 921.6kbps? That's not possible, maybe its being disconnected because of high latency?

if you connecting via bluetooth to a cellphone then your connection speed might me incorrect. (ie its the connect between the cell and pc not cell to network)

I connect via USB with my MOT.V360. I don't know what my internet speed is but I download at over 20kbps compaired to my old gprs at only 3 to 5.
How do I check my internet speed?

And futhermore, I don't think it's a latency thing as we both answer timeiusly.

Marco remember with voip you need sufficient upload as well as download speed. Edge and gprs allocate "time slots" for upload and download. Usually, on Edge, upload is only one quarter of your download speed and that, except in idea circumstances, is not adequate for skype.

VoIP and Mobile Internet

VoIP (Skype and co) are not friends of GPRS and EDGE. Indeed, bandwidth is a scarce resource on cellular networks as too much use could easy make the network congested and this would adversely affect voice calls on that network.

I am aware that MTN is making effort to ban or bill Skype users.

The 921 kbps is just the connection speed between your PC and your modem device.

The maximum speed on EDGE is 236 kbps.

My experience is that EDGE (and sometimes even 3G) not an option is for Skype.

Skype needs low latencies as well as sustained throughput, which is not obtained with EDGE.

Yes, I found that Google Talk works better. When I tested it on EDGE it worked better i.e. lower delay and used less bandwidth than Skype.

Skype runs like a bomb on HSDPA

MTNDD :D
