Telkom says that it is not yet ready to comply with the requirements of the ADSL Regulations for uncapped local bandwidth.

Um officer, I'm sorry but I'm not yet ready to comply with the speed limit on this road. kthxbye.

While local bandwidth will not be capped users will still be billed for any bandwidth used after reaching their monthly usage limit.

You can already BUY local bandwidth. There's no bleeding difference!

What amazes me, is how Telkom has effectively side stepped the entire issue by focusing on their ability to comply... i mean... am i the only one who realises that EVEN if they go forward with their proposed "solution", they are STILL in breach of the regulations, or at least the "spirit" of the regulations by charging for the local bandwidth (Thanks icasa for your poorly worded pathetic excuse for a regulation!)

In other words Telkom has everyone bitching about their ability to comply, rather than the fact that in essence they are not complying at all!!!!

If Neotel was smart, they would jump at the opportunity to offer fixed price local bandwidth. Telkom will have to adjust their thinking then. Hope that Neotel will at least try to kick Telkom in the jewels.

You mean if Neotel wasnt a telecommunications company - but they are.

Using telkom's logic, my international is ALSO uncapped... just I have to pay for it. And my phone calls are unlimited, and Vodacom give you unlimited sms, there are unlimited burgers for you at McDonalds too!

But, having said that, the law say "local bandwidth shall not have a cap". And alas, it does not have a cap. Telkom can argue that THERE service stops abuse hence they stop local...

This is silly, the law will have to be changed, icasa will take 6months to write 4 lines. It'll be argued over in government for another 6months...

Fruits of this hearing will only be here in about a years time

The only thing which could make this situation remotely palatable is if they dropped the price of local to R5 a gig. I would be happy with that in the short term.

Need i remind them that IS currently charge R4 a gig if you buy a 30G bundle.

“Telkom has committed to ICASA to be in compliance with respect to the regulation ‘local bandwidth shall not be subject to the cap’ by 1 November 2007,” Telkom said.

One year after the regulations came into force they are still not ready but they will be ready in 6 days time. They will probably call in the consultant on Wednesday.

but SAIX accounts are stil faster even if they are shaped - i see a clear speed differents on the News Servers - so when local bandwidth is free, the overall speeds should improve too.

No looks like they are uncapped but not free. We will be charged for our usage. Im still battling to see the difference!! Its just a way for them to comply WITHOUT complying.
