Is telkom mobile 3G getting slower and slower?

From having 6-12 Mbps (2-4 months ago) to only 3 and now I sometimes struggle to stream low quality video.

I hope the free telkom mobile wifi they have started to put in mini bus taxis hasn't congested the network that I pay good money to use. Or perhaps like cellc, TM is growing too fast.

I live in Northcliff Johannesburg if anyone is wondering.

Have you also noticed a decrease in telkom mobiles 3G speeds and reliability?

As TM is growing in popularity, this seems to be proof of that. I'm seeing it all over. Outside of major centres I see 3G that is akin to a modest LTE service. Up here in the big smoke we are seeing congestion more and more.

This is nothing new I suppose. It seems easy to suggest that they (cell operators) add more capacity to congested sites but this seems to be very rare. I don't think we need more cell towers per se, we have more than enough of those from all cell operators.

I've reported a few base stations to date with no apparent change. It would be nice if an insider could explain how they ultimately decide on adding extra capacity: Business case? Profit margin minimums? Complaint levels?

I am in Pta and TM is the only reliable 3G connection I have. MTN gives me EDGE

I think it really depends, on a case by case basis. In my area for example, my LTE speed has improved quite a bit (Sunninghill), probably due to transmission upgrades in the area. I suppose its driven primarily by cost as well as some predefined thresholds (e.g. congestion experienced sporadically by a few subscribers does not necessarily warrant an upgrade)

Yes I have noticed some problems lately as well. Getting packet drops and slower speeds at times.

I hope this is not a case if infrastructure being unable to cope with the amount of new users signing up AKA congestion. This was the reason I left Cell C...

What area do you stay in?

Have you tried reporting it?

I have been getting the same speeds (1-3Mbps) for the last couple years now. Sad it's not improving but glad it's not getting worse at least

I have also noticed a big drop in speed. The last 3-4 days my speeds are bad and webpages take long to load.

I'm in PE and I have the same problem. At night I can only occasionally stream videos. Most nights it buffers too often. It happens from both my phone and modem.
