Friday threads are meant to be fun, so I apologise for the sombre topic.

With President Zuma removing key ministers in what many have described as further "state capture", is there a bright future for those living in South Africa, or should people leave the country now?

Do all the people that have the ability to build the economy or influence the outcome (however small and insignificant), and regardless of the adversity, leave the country, or do they stay and "fight" for what is right?

Who will fix the mess should all the people that can afford to leave go?

Not necessarily my strategy, but I'm just asking the question.

There will always be a future. The correct question is how interesting is it going to get?

What should people be fighting for? Since nearly every large enterprise and in this country leads by government example there aren't many things to be patriotic for.

I'm not in a position to leave, but IMO you should leave if you can.

I will encourage, and assist, my kids to leave, there is no future for them here. Sad, but that is the ways that it is.

My view is the following:
1) The rich through this process will get richer.
2) The poor will get poorer.
3) The skilled will be in higher demand ( as those who want to leave will )
4) The middle income will get poorer ( but these people generally could not leave even if they wanted to )
5) The day/week/month in the long term will get better

Lets see what happens, let the dust settle and take it day by day. For those who had 1 foot already outside the border jump ( as you were almost there already ). For those of us who want to stay the greatest opportunity for real wealth normally lies after such events as opportunities arise which were not there before. If you leave you will most likely become a worker for those people who many years back took up the same opportunities which might present themselves in ZAR2.0. Buts is a gamble, but then so is Brexit and United states of Trump.

Nope.

But that doesn't mean I am looking at going anywhere. The rest of the world has its own problems. I know how to deal with the problem we face here because they are hardly new. Most people basically grew up with them.

The grass is certainly not greener on the other side. Never been on the other side? Can't leave, so I am stuck here, come what may, all will be well, eventually....Truth will always prevail - even in the darkest of hours ! Definitely leaving, definitely

Going to US...oh wait thats Trump right,
so going to Europe...oh wait Italian banks are bankrupt, Greece is bankrupt, Portugal is bankrupt,
and then theres all the terrorist threats.

So then UK it is!!....but retrenchments are happening everywhere with the initia reaction from BREXIT

South America it is, always wanted to go there....except for the massive amounts of fraud and drug abuse happening.
...the fraud being led by the Presidents in some countries

China... how is it really there ...no clue! as they censor everything from Tweets to Google.

Russia? Trumps BFF?

Rest of Africa ...well there are a few but considering that Nigeria is the largest/2nd economy in Africa
and their norm is loadshedding once a week....

There are still a handful of places left, but just saying careful for falling for the trap that the gras is always greener

Actually contrary to whatever people say... the following proves greener grass.

Life expectancy
Crime rate
Economy
Unemployment rates
Business opportunities

Good post.

I'm looking at this as the dark before the dawn. The masses are not going to vote the same way forever.

Trump > Zuma

Being from England, and having moved to SA. I am going to stay and see what unfolds.. Eventually something will give.

Everywhere has their problems. Some bigger than others.

I personally feel South Africans will eventually reach a point where everyone, regardless of creed, colour, class will do the right thing.

but hey that's my thinking/hoping..

Depends.. I think there is only one direction until such a time that the majority of people learn how democracy works and move on from supporting quick fixes, populist and liberation type movements. US is now learning why populism doesnt work haha.

Personally I think we still +/- 10 years from this happening and to get there, there was to be more extreme poverty & hardship. Maybe this year we have more of the ANC fall apart but i reckon they will retain 75% of their current voting base.. <-- not enough of a loss. So yah.. I say bring on downgrade, rand falling even lower etc as the only way we will see a change is when the voting base suffers significantly. While middle & upper do suffer currently with shifts.. the lower-end does not see as huge change just yet.

if the rand jumped to R20-30/USD they'd feel it but still not.. tax revenue drying up, tax & VAT spiraling etc then maybe. but until things fall out that badly don't expect it to change. Sadly, SA people like our northern neighbour are politically stubborn and want handouts and until this changes nothing will cease.. only exception is growing the middle + upper income group but lets face it.. without massive economic transformation which requires educational investments, its just more of the same.

Another aspect you have to take into account is AGE. if you are older than 30 but under 50.. moving out of SA is a good option. Under 25.. you have more time to play with. Thing to remember is retirement is SA based.. every time there is instability, it means your future is unstable. If there is just one thing that people who think beyond day to day living needs its stability. Investing in an unstable economy as a % of funds is risky but benefits you.. living and generating income in such an environment though is one way ticket to being broke mid retirement.

I share your sentiment

What's Namibia like? I haven't read/heard much about them in the media recently. What's their immigration requirements?
