Every phone that has WiFi.

So it's just a matter of having the correct settings?

To answer the 2nd poster - I don't really know why.

I considered joining the WUG and actually still want to, but my brother was meant to cough up half of the cost and it never materialized.

I wondered about it as my internet usage is mostly on the move with 3G on my phone (well at least before my phone was stolen) and I wondered if the same level of freedom could be achieved on a WUG with a mobile that has wifi.

Obviously one is restricted with LOS, but I reckoned that there are CDMA phones and networks - perhaps there is a manner in which a GSM phone with wifi could hop along onto a WUG.

It could, but you'd need to be *very* close to a WUG Access Point. Remember even if your phone can pickup the signal of the AP, that doesn't mean your phone can transmit back the same distance that the AP can transmit it's signal.

Although it's possible; it's very impractical.

Not really, no. Though the wug sites have powerful antennas your phone should pick up the signal, but it will not be able to transmit back to the wug site.

Unless you are very close to an antenna it will not work. Same problem with laptops.

That is why you have to buy expensive kit to connect, simply because standard "off the shelf" wifi will not be able to connect kilometers away :)

On that note, when I am home my phone is on the wug yes. I have a standard dlink wireless router for my home, so the laptop/phone/whatever can connect to it is also connected to the wug. But that router is connected to my wug kit that connects to a site about 4km away.

Just to explore this a little further, do "wifi" mobiles work on 2.4 ghz only?:D

Yes, probably not all, but by far the majority of embedded wifi is 2.4ghz.

Most of the wug sites use 5.8ghz, so mobile phones have even less chance to connect.

Very partially...

But if you are one the move, you will need different IP's and gateway setting for each different ssid you connect to.
No, there is no DHCP on the highsites' antenna's.

It would be great if each WUG client setup a VirtualAP or install the R495 (cost price) 2.4 Ghz Ubiquiti Picostation. Let them call the SSID "hotspot" and allow you to connect back to your Asterisk PBX at Home or the WUG Asterisk PBX - free calls to home and friends.

When we get our WUG up and running in little old George. We want cover the CBD with a few hotspots connecting back to WUG network.
We can here because we are smallish place. :) At least every 100-200 m

Should be 3 weeks away now from setting up our first highsite. Taken too long.
