Hi everyone,

I am hoping to pick the brains of the forum car fundi's. My 2008 i10 needs to have its clutch sorted. I took my car for a service at a Bosch Service Centre around the corner from where I work and based on their report, below is what I need to have done on my car and the quote:

"Clutch plate, pressure plate, release bearing, rear main seal, skimming fly wheel, gearbox oil and labour – cost is R8752.08 including vat."

My sphincter tightened at that price. Unfortunately my car knowledge sucks. Based on what needs to be done, would that be a reasonable price? One of the advantages of the service centre nearby is that I don't have to take time off work. So unless a service centre elsewhere can save me a significant amount, might not be worth it going elsewhere.

Any input would be appreciated

Looks a bit much to me, I did the clutch on my old Honda Jazz and the gf's Micra in 2017, that came to a total of R4200 and R6300 respectively.

This was at Astro Brake and Clutch in Boksburg.

Eish...

I replaced my Golf 6 GTI clutch setup with a performance clutch that included a dual mass flywheel, pressure plate and everything else and it was R9500 a few years ago.

A friend replaced the clutch on his 2018 Polo1.0TSI and it was R3500 for everything.

Both jobs were done at Nazirs Brake and Clutch in Durban. If you are not in Durban maybe still give them a call and ask for a price on your job so you have a reference point. They may know someone in Jhb if you are there.

A different person has now come back with this:

"The quote as follows : Clutch kit R2155 + vat

Skim Fly/wheel R580.+ vat

G/box Oil R180 + vat

Labour (5) R3475 + vat

Total with vat R7348.50"

Maybe if I get 3 additional quotes from them it will come down further

try Korean parts, see what they will quote you for a replacement clutch kit
and just take it to a workshop for them to fit for you.

I think the original workshop it trying to rip you off big time.

Can you give a more detailed breakdown of the R8 752.08? Feels a bit expensive without knowing the full breakdown.

That's what they provided. This is what the same place provided when another person emailed me a quote:

"The quote as follows : Clutch kit R2155 + vat

Skim Fly/wheel R580.+ vat

G/box Oil R180 + vat

Labour (5) R3475 + vat

Total with vat R7348.50"

Looked a little pricey, will shop around

It won't work well, they won't be able to give you a guarantee on parts they did not supply, they might even do a shoddy job just to prove a point.

So I've gotten another quote from a place I do trust:

Clutch Kit: R1950
Flywheel Skim: R450
Motylgear (???): R214.70
Labour: R2950
Vat: R834.71
Total: R6399.41

Seems the labour is the biggest cost, no way around that unfortunately

When I saw I10 I thought it is a clutch story, seems they all go and Hyundai know it. make sure to get a good guarantee with the fix. Few people I know had the same problems.

That's a good quote, take it. The labour is reasonable, changing a clutch is a chore.

The car has about 179 000km on the clock and been extremely reliable. So can't really complain. It's a small car so imagine the clutch does take quite a bit of strain

What I'd do- Ask the original place to beat that quote, if yes, go with them, if no go with these guys you say you trust
And either option, make sure you get some kind of guarantee.

Yowzers, why did a car of that age need a new clutch?

HAHA!

I am looking to upgrade my clutch for my car since the stock clutch can't handle the torque.
R21k for a button clutch, single mass flywheel, labour and all the other costs.

Wow. Hyundai is expensive. For a Toyota etios clutch kit and labour my indie charges me 2500. Can’t you try and find a good independent to do it?

Your Indie likes you, because he is basically installing it for mahala.
