Is this lawful...giving a raise to selected employees?

Hard work means nothing if the manager is a show boat themselves. It's the brown nosers who get promotions and good increases. I will however not stoop that low.

Perfomance appraisals whoop whoop. At my company TOP performers were given 3%, avg performers 2% and below average 1% or 0 for the last two years. Contractors who got extensions on their contracts, got 0% increases as well.

Wow this thread doesn't reek of self entitlement.

Maybe you are good, maybe you just think you're good - we'll never know. However, from my own personal experiences, some people think they are great at what they do when they really suck at it (or at at best are dead average). Just because you can do a job doesn't make you damn good at it either.

No one is entitled to give you a raise unless, as stated before, they have a set policy where performance reviews/salary reviews happen and you score in a zone that entitles you to an increase. But at the end of the day your employer really doesn't have to give you an increase.

Thinking that you might have some kind of legal recourse instead of sitting them down and discussing the issue with them just screams immaturity. Maybe they picked up on this and want you out?

Maybe your boss is just a prickhead that really likes men that have their heads up his ass?

If you're not happy - leave and go somewhere where your employer doesn't take you for granted. You will spend a large portion of you life working so it's worth putting in the effort to find an employer that will bend over backwards to help you while you bend over backwards to help them.

You say you are very unhappy at work, do you not believe this attitude possibly permeates through your daily tasks?
You may not realize it but you could possibly be miserable and not as good at your job as you think?

Devils advocate here.

We get raises in January dependent on our performance (even average performers get ok raises). With our Performance appraisals, we can get a bonus of anywhere from 130% to 250% of our monthly package :D

I think it's only fair that annual increases should at least be in line with inflation. Employees who perform well should obviously get more.

(Thankfully I work for a company where this holds true.)

I work for a small IT company where I'm not happy at all. Last month my employer gave a certain few employees a raise and left out about 30% of us with neither a raise nor an explanation as to why we didn't get any. Is this lawful to discriminate like this, to add on that none of the women at the company got a raise.

I am livid as I know I'm damn good at my job. Is this just a case of unfairness or is it unlawful?

Very disappoined with you Gemini-girl. I cannot think why you want to discuss this on the webz before coming to me. Please come to my office so that we can discuss your comments you have made, also being with you your performance documentation.

Probably a huge water fountain topic. Can just imagine the fuming gossip and frothing mouths as you bitch and moan with the other 30% about how you rock and deserve a raise more than all those geeks. I mean, you get to work on time some days and you smell nice and look good and those reports are always finished on time and are probably accurate. The bitching and moaning probably goes on for half an hour as disgruntled colleagues rotate to foam at the mouth with you. After a couple of flybys from the boss where you forced a fake smile with those R6k a month pearly-whites you clicked that it may be a good idea to go sit down at your desk and bitch about it online... (I know you posted this in the evening and probably from home but the images were so vivid I couldn't shake them). You didn't get a raise. You will get no help here. The boss has his/her reasons for not giving you one so go speak to your boss or just work harder, study your ass off and become the boss.

/pats self on back for new promotion and raise...

Really lady. Pull up your big boy underpants and face reality

increases and bonusses are given at managements discreation.
They evaluated your work and decided you did not warrant an increase.

Work harder and earn said money next year or FO to somewhere else(this is your right in this country of ours)....

If this is a case of gender discrimination, you can take it up with CCMA.

What happened to the oldest office rules?

1. The boss is always right.
2. When in doubt refer to rule 1.

Probably ended up in the same unwanted pile with ethics, morals, manners and honesty. There along with the teacher's cane and pops' slipper.
