"But the playing field is definitely not even between the government sector and the private sector from an ownership point of view," he said.

Walters was reacting to the news that SA Airway's subsidiary company Tulca was to launch a no-frills airline this month, to be called Mango.

'I doubt anyone would be complaining if it was a privately owned entrant'
On Monday, Business Day reported that Tulca had been "given the green light (by the Air Service Licensing Council) to operate a low-cost domestic airline service."

from New airline is 'unfair competition'

At least one person was killed on Friday when a cargo aircraft belonging to private airline Mango Airlines crashed in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, UN-sponsored Okapi radio said.

from Cargo plane crashes in DRC

yea....i'm kinda hoping these are two different Mango Airlines...I know they say it is still going to launch, but if this isn't the same airline, then at least come up with a name that isn't associated with another African airline with a not so great track record...and where the top Google results when searching for the Mango Airlines website is about one crashing.

Hmmm let's see...

What can SAA do to cut costs...
Maintain the planes less...
Pay staff less...
Don't have a `high tech' call center :D
Don't serve horrible food on flights...
Man... there's not much they can actually do other than just lower the price.
Don't get it.

yea, its madness. maybe with the Congo incident (if that was the SAA subsidiary), they thought "hey, here's one we haven't thought of, how about untrained pilots! sure we could save a bundle there!"

Apparently on SAA itself they're locked into union contracts which massively increase their costs, make them inefficient etc. so this is a way of getting out fo them.

"In this case, the applicant was Tulca Pty Ltd (not SAA)," he said.

While Tulca's shares had been issued to SAA, Tulca had fulfilled the council's requirements including financial stability, aircraft, equipment, maintenance and crew staff.

"They proved that they could function separately and independently of SAA," he said.

Come on how separate are they really? Checked the whois of their domain a while ago, flymango.co.za and it was registered to SAA, just checked again and its now registered to TULCA. Just window dressing I suppose.

There's something that disturbs me about flying around Africa in a plane named after a tropical fruit.

Why not paint it yellow, at least it will look like a certain fruit.

Hey look mommy - the Oros man can fly!
No my son, that's mango airlines...

Well, 1Time is called 1Time, because you only fly with them once and then never again.

Kulula.com is OK (the cafee with wings), last time I was flying home with Comair, because the Kulula flight was full & BA was so nice to 'upgrade' us to a Comair jet.

Wonder what they'll be saying about Mango? Oh, ****, the Mango hit the fan.

Mango Airline

Perverse that a government with an agenda to redistribute wealth to the poor should set up an the mango airline to subsidise the flying class.

Ah, hope this lasts!

With all the press - bad and good - regarding Mango airlines, I hope it succeeds. Especially with 2010 just around the corner, we need to get our airports in order, more than we need to worry about airlines.

First person to blog about it that I found: Mango airlines

This is not our Mango. Our Mango only flies national (JHB/CTP/DBN for now), and they also do not fly Cargo...

saw this on another site:

"Mango launched with the promise of "cheaper flights" R169 Cape Town to Jo'burg till December...

In your dreams my friend.

It doesn't exist. I requested a quote for 2 - and was quoted R620 to Jo'burg and R613 to Cape Town.I didn't notice (unlike the other airlines) that the price displayed is only for a single ticket and end up paying R3 000 for a return flight. (The taxes being a whooping R520)

I tried to cancel, but would loose all my money. Looking at Kulula I realised that I would have paid R2 000!!! What an ***

Don't even bother to phone the Helpline - you wait for hours - get cut off and then wait again.

Typically SAA --- want to win the market share with false promises!!"

has anyone else experienced this false advertising.

I coulda guessed it was a catch or something , i was thinking eish for that price , will we be travelling with caged up chickens in the overhead compartments.

Sounds like telkom .... adsl at R214 per month.
Yup - exactly like SAA... sometimes even costs more to fly saa on voyager miles after airport tax than 1Time
