From IS Advisory:

<i>Internet Solutions hosting provider in New York, TELEHOUSE, is performing emergency maintenance on critical power systems this coming weekend - the 25th and 26th September 2004. TELEHOUSE will proceed with emergency battery replacements on UPS equipment - this work will be done while on diesel generator to minimize the risk of outage to critical equipment. No services impact and no downtime is expected.

TELEHOUSE is aggressively working to correct the battery problem that caused an UPS to fail during a power failure in New York on Monday evening, the 20th September 2004 at 20h08 (SAST). This resulted in the IS international access fibre outage experienced between Rosebank and New York (2 x 45MB fibre circuits), and between Cape Town and New York (1 x 45MB fibre circuit). After power had been restored in New York and further intensive investigation, IS engineers established that certain IS network devices had not auto-recovered correctly. TELEHOUSE engineers were instructed to hard reset the affected devices. Connectivity was restored and traffic was normalized by 01h00 on the morning of the 21st September 2004

The specific maintenance times are to be provided by TELEHOUSE on Friday the 24th September 2004. The IS GSC (Global Service Centre) and senior network engineers will be on high alert at these times and will closely monitor all international services.

Internet Solutions</i>

so... um is this why speeds are still slow? cuz it sounds like everything was sorted by 21 September...

doesnt explain why we still have slow internet connectivity....

IS and Sentech need to possibly work together which is something which is highly unlikely...

I got a phone call from Sentech trying to tell me that my speed levels are slow because of noise levels
around the tower... but my speeds are only slow at night... which says to me that they actually dont know
what is going on and I am getting sick & tired of being sick & tired of a half arsed service provider who
have done nothing to provide me and a others with a consistent network.

If our netowrk admin at work did this to out netowork he would be fired... but the only problem is one cant fire
Sentech nor can they be held accountable because they are a GOverment company and obviously under the protection of
the goverment because quite obviously it is an AA company which makes it worse.

I am not going to spew out my feelings concerning AA and nor am I going to go off on a white guilt tripp about how
I dont have a problem with it cuz in fact I do just like everyone else who is using Sentech.

Get people with the correct qualifications and attitude and dont base decisions on skin cuz then you will have something
that works.

Sentechs days are numbered and I cant wait for more broad band providers to start delivering so I can help in the
demise of Sentech by cancelling.

It seems to me that since the monday outage, something in Sentech's network has gone awry.

I'm getting incredible upload speeds on P2P, but downloads are non existant.

Orc tells me the P2P has least priority, but still can't expain why my internation bandwidth test times out on HTTP. (or why uploads are so good).javascript:insertsmilie('[:(]')

Does IPwireless know how F**ked up Sentech are?javascript:insertsmilie('[:(!]')

Have begun hunting for alternative solutions in Durban.javascript:insertsmilie('[:D]')

the story about the noise on the tower i found quite funny ... i got the call told them off
here are the facts ....

1)some towers use microwave STM1 links 55Mb/s to the sentech network others use Cambridge wireless point to multipoint connections (sentechs proposed bussiness solution) only the cambridge equipment is affected in some areas
2)the interference is caused by spectrum allocation problems and this is been dealt with by all concerned (dumb ****s did not test properly) when possible the affected towers are been upgraded to microwave ...

this is the cause of loss/latency and therefore speed issues if you dont have a latency problem ATM you probably not affected ...
