my vodafone mobile connect software shows that ive reached my 1 gig limit, but on vodacom4me site it says ive got another 600mb left, which is correct??? ive only used about 200mb the past week so even if it takes a week to update it should say ive only got 200mb left

The software generally seems to be more accurate than the website, wouldn't take a chance on being billed out of bundle rates because you assume you've got 600mb left.

The VMC s/w is known to be less accurate than what is displayed on vodacom4me.co.za, in particular when VMC is closed with an open connection or crashes, then VMC doesn't update its own data transfer usage records.

vodacom4me.co.za can be 3 or more hours out of synch, but usually one can manually disconnect to get data transfer usage to update on vodacom4me.co.za.

But, the best way to monitor your data transfer usage, especially with Windoze, is to use 3rd party s/w, for example DUMeter [just one of several].

Ok don't actually use the VMC s/w myself so was probably confusing that with 3rd party apps such as DUMeter, just seen a lot of people complain about the website being inaccurate.

so do they charge u for what they say u have used on the website or do they suprise u the end of the month with a high bill, vodacom should have the most accurate information about ur data usage

vodacom4me.co.za gets its data usage records from the same network systems that the billing systems use, the only problem is that it can take a while for data usage to update, specifically one needs to manually disconnect to force an update.

A "bandwidth monitor" application [e.g. DUMeter|NetMeter] should show nearly the same usage that vodacom4me.co.za shows [after a manual disconnect], relatively small differences can ocurr when one's own firewall blocks traffic that is still recorded by Vodacom's network systems.

Just checked my usage on vodacom4me and compared it with my 6680's data counters: 20Kb difference. So the software for the 3G/HSDPA seems seriously dodgy.

Typically the VMC will 'under-read' compared to 4me, as it won't save usage information if a session terminated abnormally. (I.e., you did not disconnect via the dash).

In da_man's case, it looks like he disconnected correctly and ended up with a more accurate number than 4me. I.e., 4me is late.

I think in LandyMan's case, the 4me records are just more up to date.

The best way to address this (as already advised by other forumites), is to run your own counters on your desktop (or phone if you use it as a modem) and to trust these. They cannot over-read, so you'll err on the safe side.

Is there a cut-off option available with VC?

If you reach your cap, you will be cut-off?

As said - you could end with a very deep hole in your pocket otherwise.

AFAIK, yes, contract customers can change a setting via vodacom4me.co.za that hard-caps a data bundle...

@v3g, perhaps you could post a link to a screenshot of where this can be changed on vodacom4me.co.za?

Yea, that's probably the best option. Vodacom should actually make it a mandatory thing [which you can unlock [EASILY] if the need arise]. I.e. if you buy a 500MB bundle you get disconnected automatically at 500MB ...same for other bundle sizes.

I've had endless issues where i get to end of month [29th-31st], check usage on see a 100MB or so left...then the 7th i get my bill and time and again i went over by 50-100MB [R100-R200 aditional costs] even when i tried my utmost best to use up 100MB AND Not go over. In the end it really came down only having 50MB [and not the 100MB the site showed at that time].

Either way, thats why i moved to prepaid options, because it just gives me so much ease of mind. I can start a 100MB download and not worry that i might be exceeding my bundle without even knowing , my connection just disconnects ....

I agree that Vodacom should, by default, enable the hard-capping option for all new contract data customers, and inform them about vodacom4me.co.za as well as ad-hoc data bundles if they need to transfer more data in any particular month.

For existing contract data customers, Vodacom should send out an sms to inform or remind customers that a hard capping option is available on vodacom4me.co.za, IOW for existing customers, give them the option of enabling it themselves.

Also, similar to the vlive APN, browsing the vodacom4me.co.za site should be possible once hard capped, so that customers can change the hard capping setting or buy an ad-hoc data bundle.

Finally, when buying an ad-hoc data bundle, there should be a checkbox that by default is 'checked' to hard-cap that ad-hoc data bundle, as well as the option of changing this later on when the bundle is nearly used up.
