Israel strikes Iran nuclear sites and military leadership, as Middle East braces for retaliation

What's happening now

• Israel strikes Iran: Israel has launched unprecedented strikes on Iran, targeting its nuclear program and senior military leaders in an attack that Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said will last many days. The attack plunges the Middle East into fresh uncertainty, increasing the risk of a wider regional war as Israel braces for Iran’s retaliation.

• Top commander killed: General Hossein Salami, the commander-in-chief of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard was among those killed in the attacks, Iranian state media reported.

• Nuclear targets: Netanyahu said “Operation Rising Lion” struck Iran’s main enrichment facility in Natanz, nuclear scientists, and what he called “the heart of Iran’s ballistic missiles program.”

• US position: There was no US involvement or US assistance in the strikes, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said. “Tonight, Israel took unilateral action against Iran. We are not involved in strikes against Iran and our top priority is protecting American forces in the region,” he said.

A damming IAEA report was just released regarding the Iranian nuclear program. You could almost see the Israeli and American military wheels start turning after its release. The US for instance hijacked around 20000 anti drone rockets meant for Ukraine and sent them to the middle east and evacuated all non essential personnel on some middle east bases.

or a war would stop this process

Iran getting nukes is kind of a checkmate for Israel. What Israel is essentially doing is saying Iran trying to build a nuke is a casus belli for war between the two and they will launch limited attacks on the nuclear program every time it takes off. Considering Iran's ongoing proxy war into Israel via Hamas I can understand why. Really not seeing any solution out of this mess in the middle east. Israel can't back down as that would mean their extermination and the Muslim world won't back down as their hatred is just too deep. Starting to seem like the Tasmanian solution would have been a better one.

by that logic, since people in this thread keep reminding us that it is the Qatari government who funded Hamas, why not attack Qatar?

its like the US bombing Afghanistan for 911 when the people involved was apparently Saudis

A lot of countries fund Hamas. I never said Israel attacks funders, I said they attack nuclear programs of Hamas backers. Qatar has no nuclear program. Iran sends money and weapons to Hamas and if they got nukes you can be sure they would try build miniaturized nukes to smuggle in and detonate in Israel. Israel is such a small country geographically that a very small nuclear explosion would be devastating to them. It would also devastate the Palestinians in the West bank and Gaza strip I might add but Iran cares about their lives a whole lot less than they care about killing Israeli's. Anyone who does not know that fact by now is blind or willfully lying. The Muslim world is more than happy to spend thousands of Palestinian lives for each Jewish death and feel nothing but glee.

can be sure? that sounds like a slippery slope fallacy that resulted in the Iraq mess

edit: and hasn't Iran been two weeks away from the nuclear bomb for the past 20 years?

Nope. I can't be sure of anything. However I have as little skin in this game as is possible for a citizen of the world that far removed from the middle east. Israel has to make that call. I think the whole thing is a stinking mess and both sides need to figure peace out. At the same time I am a firm believer that the Muslim world bears most of the blame. If Israel lays down arms completely they die. If the Muslim world stops attacking them there would probably be peace. The one side is genocidal and the other for the most part just wants to be left alone (with some notable exceptions where they expanded in provoking ways into Palestinian areas under their more right leaning politicians).

It's not like this has not happened in the past. The French and Germans fought each other religiously for millennia. Julius Caesar was writing about it in his diaries saying how easy they were to conquer because the constantly weakened themselves against each other allowing him to swoop in. Now we live in a world where its hard to imagine France and Germany ever being at war again. While not exactly friends they have figured out that peace is better than what happened in the World Wars. It took a scary mutual enemy (USSR) to force them to work together and a lot of death but they got there. Hoping somehow the middle east figure out the same. Peace helps the whole lot of them a lot more than the current situation. The general instability of the Middle East drives away so much investment, tourism, etc.

but you didn't say anything about whether you are sure

you said "you can be sure"

meaning that the issue of certainty is on me, that I can be certain, whether you are uncertain or not is irrelevant to your original point

so you can be unsure of things, but I can be sure according to you

your comparison to Europe excludes a few details, its not really an equivalent comparison
