If you represent a bigger group and have a contract with them you have to keep to the rules of a contract despite free speech. For instance if I went and became a Disney star and then started splashing social media with risque stuff I should expect a termination of the contract with Disney as it has the potential to hurt their brand. Same thing here. He has the right to freedom of speech, but the organisation has its own standards it supports and if you become a member of that organisation they hold the right to cancel their contract with you if you go against their rules.
Still, I could argue it the other way too, losing your job for a religious view is fairly harsh. If the Rugby team's views are that strong and SJW views that strong I can envision a future where they could ban all Christians from the team just because of association with a view that is potentially against homosexuality. Where do you draw the line?
