when you change the governance structure of an area it doesn't necessarily mean the people who are governed vanish...

Islam had to have started with fundamental christian beliefs.Actually according to some he was the greatest of all Muslims bar Muhammad..... they tried to appropriate Him early.
As has been said of Islam before.... it's based on a mellenia long feud with Jews and a series of misunderstandings about Christian theology probably driven by the state churches being obviously corrupt.Islam had to have started with fundamental christian beliefs.
Early Arabs needed some kind of foothold and then branched off into what eventually became Islam.
