It’s official: Netflix is coming to SA

Viva the consumer

Pops the champagne cork

Although we need to be vigilant to ensure no hurdles are set up to slow this move down.

They might as well just make it legal for SA citizens to access Netflix USA. I can't see content on Netflix SA being as good as Netflix US. Most people will still Unotelly it.

That is assuming that there is going to be any content worth watching on "Netflix SA", besides Knight Rider and Airwolf. As much as I liked the old 80's series, I also want to not have to torrent (or use Unotelly to watch) Sons Of Anarchy and Orange Is The New Black, amongst others.

That's true, but it removes people having to jump through hoops just to sign up. You can always just change the UnoTelly dynamo to the US.

What difference will this make to me?

I can currently access any Netflix region with unotelly. As soon as SA will be available I will have access to that as well.

May as well just stick with my current setup.

This is good news and the timing is good as broadband speeds will cater for this but then and it will be simpler to access for the local market without needing 3rd party solutions.

Mmm, good point. I trust I'll be able to keep my US subscription if the SA version costs more.

I might be mistaken, but 1 Netflix account is covered globally? IE a US citizen comes to SA, goes to Netflix.com and it redirects him to Netflix SA?

Unotelly would make you come from any region you choose. So without Unotelly, your statement above would be correct

Yip, on the one hand the Netflix exclusive content is getting better and better, and more prevalent. Probably worth the R100 pm alone.

I'd like to see some SA series make it on to Netflix, even if its just to expose those shows to the rest of the world.

I'll hang on to my Unotelly sub for now though... I like the multiple regions.

Yes, but subscriptions are priced in local currencies, not in converted US$.

If Netflix read this(I know they wont) but to get this to take off they need a few things:

1: Hosting in SA for our shyte connections and pushing for zero rated bandwidth from ISP's, or even "Netflix Packages"
2: Non CC payment via EFT's or going into Checkers to buy vouchers.
3: Hosting in SA for our shyte connections.

The problem with this is that the high wealth afrikaans pple won't care, they have no imagination and there's no ruppy. The low-market doesn't have the connections, finances or technical knowledge to use it. Netflix is therefore stuck with the middle-market of tech savvy individuals(us) which to be honest isn't that large.

Oh yes and piracy is still easier.
