Its tight as ever..

If you know your stuff you won't battle to find a job, but if your skills are average... you'll battle like everyone else.

That being said, I'm seeing multitudes of idiots finding jobs very easily. So skills being average to poor is still acceptable as always, as long as you can prove you've worked in IT before and know where to turn a PC on, you can do anything.

I don't understand how does one really know your stuff. I worked in a networking company for 2 years and thought I mastered it all no one could tell me anything.

Then I quit my job and started working for another company and suddenly I know hardly anything.
.
To me the only real skill I've learned is when faced with a problem I can see it through to the end. Everything else is just Google basically

Well that's just it. I know a guy who sweared he was the best Unreal Tournament player but never played online. Then I opened his eyes through his ass with my foot straight up in it.

Didn't mean he knew anything. A sheltered company like that with little to no challenge in your job will always end off being a learning experience but when you then do decide to move on, you have those 2 years of building blocks, starting with a new company who challenges you, you will feel like you know nothing, but 2 years from now, you might have outgrown the challenges. So who knows.

It's a growth experience. As long as you're not sitting there thinking "****, I'm a network genius I know everything I am the best!" and realize there's always things to learn and challenge yourself with you'd be fine in the future

I could easily get a job if I wanted to, I get 2-3 calls a week; every week for people looking for somebody with 10+ years experience in various enterprise solutions. Having said that, I know a lot of my customers have stopped hiring; so it depends on what you do, and your experience....

Arrived in SA in February. After about a dozen interviews I got a job one month ago in Web Dev/DBA. The markets not too bad depending on your skills and experience. Its tight here in Durban though, they'll squeeze every last drop of blood out of you! :D

You will never fully "know your stuff", not in IT, because it is always changing. I have worked with guys who bragged about being in IT for 20 years, but they don't understand Windows past NT.

The trick to being successful in IT is to always be prepared to learn new things - if you think that you have mastered something in two years (or ten, or ever, for that matter), then you could be in for a surprise when new technology emerges and leaves you clueless....

I think in many cases, it goes on how good you can make yourself appear: something along the lines of - "If your knowledge can't shine through, dazzle them with your bull**it.." (I think the exact quote is someone's sig)

Anyway, my insignifcant opinion: I think the issue boils down to how well your problem solving skills are. Obviously, not everybody knows everything, but if you have a good idea of what you are doing, as well as being able demonstrate problem-solving for issues that you don't know, you stand a better opportunity than someone who is wanting JUST a job...

Doesn't mean you'll get paid properly ;)

IT market sucks big time like everything else. Do not quit until you find another job.
