An IT manager was remanded in custody in the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court and is awaiting sentencing for attempting to extort money from two companies.

The accused, Dustin Steele who was employed by a KwaZulu-Natal management company admitted to attempted extortion from the companies.

He had contacted a major fast-food company on 7 August this year and claimed to be in possession of damning confidential information on them. He demanded to be paid in cryptocurrencies for his silence. The company didn’t respond to him and instead reported the incident to the police’s forensic unit.

Good - moer him. 6 yrs from finishing his IT training ... then he gets clever. Now he's stuffed up his future. :X3:

The guys want to get clever, seeing others get away with it. What they don't realize is that those in South Africa doing this crap had years of experience back home before coming here. That's why they initially succeed, but at the end of they day they also get taken down. Somehow it's just not newsworthy here like abroad.

so was he actually "in possession of damning confidential information on them" and did he obtain it via some level of "cyber" skill?

if not, I fail to see how this equates to "cyber crime", just regular old extortion based on a bluff

This guy is an idiot...even if he had dirt on these groups as claimed, its not like bringing it to light would make any difference.
This isn't America, nobody cares much for big corp scandals the way muricans do
