IT salaries in South Africa vs Amsterdam

There is an acute shortage of skilled professionals in South Africa, which is made worse by the constant stream of emigrants to countries with better economies and governance.

Popular locations among those who leave South Africa to work overseas include the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands.

For most IT jobs in the Netherlands you can telecommute so you don't have to live in Amsterdam in order to do your work.

One thing that I find interesting is the talk of big houses and open spaces in SA vs Europe. There are many open space in Europe that is just a hop on the Euro rail or public transport away. We need big houses in SA because you can't actually go anywhere because it is unsave and therefore have to kuier at home. In the Netherlands, not so much. I hardly do any more than sleep in my house in Rotterdam. Rest of the time we are out and about without fear or concern.

I feel like we haven’t explored all the meaningless salary comparisons fully. I mean, how about a comparison to Iceland, Azerbaijan or Mongolia?

The big Mac index is a bit insufficient for the comparison of South Africa to Amsterdam unfortunately, so much value in the nuance of day to day.

Signed, a South African living a 5 minute cycle away from Amsterdam Central Station.

Also, the averages comparison can be misleading as it doesn't really tell you how far that salary can get you. A low salary in Amsterdam will get you a MUCH better quality of life than a low salary in Joburg, while a high salary in Joburg may net you a better quality of life (depending on what you value) compared to a high salary in Amsterdam.

Maybe it's time to ping young Jamie with my own story and data, though I don't expect the extra insight to turn into much higher traffic than this.

This is why MyBroadband is nothing more than an opinion piece blog and not a trusted source on anything.

You should be fined for the bullshit you post.

I mean, some of those Netherlands average salaries are lower than what's required to even get a visa.

Clearly written by someone who never lived overseas. With my current salary, I pay myself the salary I had in South Africa to pay off whatever I have there *and* live the same way I did when I was in SA. The only difference? Now I have money left over at the end of the month to put in savings as well
