Perhaps the fact that the school said it's a Roman Salute makes the matter exponentially worse. The Romans were among the first significant civilisations of whom we have well-documented accounts of their crimes against humanity. Their crimes are what inspired the very people who went on to establish and support the Nazi party.

What is even crazier is that Nazi is just the shorthand usage for "National Party" so odds are if we were a german nation our old NP party would likely also have been named Nazi's, the idea of being a Nationalist is not a bad idea in itself because it simply means putting your own country first however the German Nazi party took it too far by trying to take over Europe and picking and choosing who were real germans inside the country etc etc. and thats the real issue.

I don't think people know what the words mean that they decided to hate or ban. They just know the sound of it or the visual of it without any clue of the meaning behind said words.
