It's official, if you live outside of SA you can now vote!

Great news and spread the word amongst family and friends!

Still needs to be confirmed by the Constitutional Court, and the government can still appeal the ruling.

Interestingly, when convicts went to the courts a few years ago, the ANC decided not to appeal. So it's going to be very interesting to see what they do now!

Are there systems in place to allow ex pats to register for the vote? From what I understand, the election date is due to be announced any day now and once that's done it's all over for those who aren't registered. No registration, no vote.

What about SA citizens that have citizenship in another country, say Australia?

Dual citizenship shouldn't be a factor. As long as you have a valid SA ID.

I strongly disagree, it should be a factor. The thought of people like Kevin Pieterson having a say in our elections does not sound right, especially as they have embraced whatever adopted country they are living in.

But hey, we will have to wait for ConCourt to make a ruling. But, IMO, it not right.

I feel if you pay taxes in SA and you are here for more than 4 months (1/3) of the year you should be given voting rights.

I have dual citizenship.

Is it just KP you have a problem with, or should I not be allowed to vote either?

How many people are we talking about here?
200?
2000?
This is a fuss about nothing.

Yes but everyone should have the right to vote and that is the bottom line.

Where will you then draw the line is it not important that 3wielkromdraaifontein also has a voting station or plans are made to allow the people who live there access to a voting station?

And no I dont believe that they will make any major difference on their own, but just remember: "No drop of rain believes it’s responsible for the flood" and every little bit helps.

I said people like KP, i.e left SA and adopted whatever country. So if you fall into that grouping, then yeah, I see no reason why you should have a say in the country you have clearly turned your back on.

If a guy in jail can vote, surely people overseas may vote as well. Most of them are overseas because of the guy in jail.

I still think Rapists, child-molesters (and all similiar crimes) and murderers should not vote.

Ah. Thanks for clearing that up.

How exactly are you going to ascertain - without infringing on anyone's constitutional rights - that someone has turned their back on SA?

Easy.

Ask our great and infinitely intellectual comrade Malema.

Anc, sorry - Government, would say that if you don't live in SA, you don't vote.

But if you redistribute wealth, in order to feed your family (or dealer), you may.

We all know the ANC is hypocritical, so I honestly think that they will appeal, if the Con. Court allows the ruling.

By that same benchmark prisoners in SA should not get to vote either, as they by the same token did not embrace South Africa and its laws...

Ah, but in ZA those prisoners can become parliamentarians!

The ANC is just **** scared because most of the people abroad would vote against them.
Considering the election numbers last time around, if EVERY expat voted, the ANC would lose a large part of their majority.
