Fernando Alonso knew nothing of the alleged plan for Nelson Piquet to crash deliberately at last year's Singapore Grand Prix in a bid to help him win the race, AUTOSPORT has learned.

While the focus of the FIA's World Motor Sport Council hearing later this month now appears to revolve around what took place in a pre-race meeting between Piquet, Flavio Briatore and Pat Symonds, it has emerged that Alonso was not involved in any of the tactics.

AUTOSPORT understands that Alonso was interviewed at the Belgian Grand Prix as part of the FIA investigation into exactly what took place in Singapore last year.

Sources have revealed that he told the stewards, plus representatives of the Quest agency and lawyers Sidley Austin LLP, that he was unaware that Piquet planned to crash deliberately early in the race.

It is understood that Alonso told the investigators that he had accepted his strategy to stop so early in the race simply because he wanted an 'aggressive' approach to the event.

A report submitted ahead of the FIA's World Motor Sport Council hearing into the matter, which takes place in Paris on September 21, confirms that Alonso "knew nothing of the alleged plan to cause a deliberate crash."

Sources have also revealed that race engineers at Renault were also unaware of any plan for Piquet to crash - with some of them having also been interviewed in Belgium.

It is understood that one engineer even questioned Piquet after the Singapore race about exactly what happened when he spun into the wall on lap 14 of the race. The Brazilian replied that he had simply lost control of the car.

There was also some debate on the pit wall during the race when Alonso was brought into the pits on lap 12 of the race - which was earlier than his fuel load would have allowed him to go.

Radio transcripts of the race, which have been obtained by the FIA, show that director of engineering Symonds did not share the concerns of fellow team members about making such an early stop – telling the team: "No, no, it's going to be alright."

Piquet claims that in the pre-race meeting in Singapore he was asked to crash deliberately in the race to help Alonso win, while Symonds and Briatore are both adamant that the idea came from the Brazilian driver himself.

Renault has said it will issue no comment about the matter prior to the FIA hearing later this month.
Well it doesn't matter if it was Piquet's idea or not now - Briatore and Symonds were party to it and knew what they were doing.... they were race fixing! Wonder if they were betting too?
I have a hard time believing that Piquet got the idea before the race to crash on behalf of Alonso.

It's really sad that the once good name of F1 is being sullied so. :(

Right, so a rookie wanting desperately to prove himself worthy of the Piquet name comes up with this scheme to 'assist' his team-mate? Righty-ho.

I'm sorry - Briatore is a snake. Shame on the bastard for deliberately ruining Piquet's career. Sour grapes with old man Piquet, perhaps? Pure speculation on my part, but something's not right.

Ruining nelson's career? So you think it is flavio's fault he never shaped and does not look to be a talented driver? What did flavio do to destroy his career? If he shut his mouth and was not sour he may have been able to make a come back but now he will be known as a cheater so both sides lose, which i am glad about. Nelson has destroyed his career not flavio who gave him ample opportunity to shine. He never did.

Flavio is also Nelson's manager... not team manager... his PERSONAL manager. Not that much of a stretch.

EDIT

I'm not arguing that Nelson might be pretty useless behind the wheel. I'm saying that Flavio & Co. are taking the opportunity to pin the fixing of a race on Nelson in order to sink his career.

This year case in point... start of the season saw Alonso get the majority of the allowed testing hours PLUS they were mostly in the dry - Piquet gets very little and they are in the wet. You just can't perform with this years testing schedule and Flav knows it - he wanted Alonso to excel cos Alonso is his best prospect. Piquet's undoing was Flav - of course most can't blame Flav for those decisions but then Flav cant blame Piquet for lack of form!

Rite Now Flav and Pat are guilty as charged of race fixing, end of story. They were the senior guys there so even if this was piquet's doing, they would have been shocked at his suggestion and told him to get lost if they were clean... whichever way you look at it, they cheated.

Flavio Flavio Flavio! what are you doing man, but you know what this is just 1 incident. Who knows how much else that has happened, plus its over and done with Massa had his race cocked up and I felt that cost him the title.

Well of course they are trying to pin it on him, what did nelson expect that he would get a flippin gold medal for breaking his silence?

It is all good and well to feel guilty about something and then tell the world but when you do it after you get fired you look stupid.

What is the bet if nelson was still in the team this story would not have been told. Funny how nelson now has something to say about it, why did he not come forward sooner? Sour grapes and he has now ruined any chance of getting back into f1 he had. So everyone loses which is awesome.

I hope they nail nelson and i hope they nail renault badly for this because it matters not who told him to do it, he did it which makes just as guilty and a cheat and even worse is he only comes clean when he wants some revenge for getting the boot.

The inference is that the Brazilians threatened to make public their allegations of foul play when underperforming Piquet Jr was sacked by Renault.

Former GP2 champion Piquet Jr stepped up to F1 in 2008 and took second spot in Germany, but consistently struggled in qualifying and often retired from races.

His results were even worse in 2009 and he has been replaced in the team by Romain Grosjean, also a graduate of the feeder series which races alongside F1.

Yea to me it sounds like nelson was just crap and now he is angry.

Stupid idiot, i hope if he was blackmailing them this case goes to trial.
