Time running out for people with prepaid electricity meters in South Africa

At around 20:15 on Sunday, 24 November 2024, millions of prepaid electricity meters in South Africa will stop accepting voucher tokens for new units.

Eskom and municipalities around the country have run intensive upgrade programmes and consumer education campaigns to encourage prepaid users to update their meters before the deadline.

“Eskom’s KRN dashboard shows that it still has 2,435,088 prepaid customers who need to update their meters.”

How are there so many if you get the upgrade codes when buying power? Unless these are the dodgy ones?

Sleepers will sleep.

Until the deadline passes and they can't load their accounts anymore. Then suddenly they awaken abruptly and pandemonium ensues and everyone and everything else is blamed.

Or they’ve been dialing the code on their cellphones and getting some poor guys voicemail. Real story.

So its like the Y2k moment for these meters worldwide, its not a local thing which many seems to think it is.

But all I can say is, I wont loose sleep over this because I'm on postpaid.

Just my risk of load shedding will be reduced.

They're doing a Key Rotation globally? Interesting, I wasn't aware of that.

Good, there are going to be many dodgy skelm meters in the townships that will stop working

I've seen really really old meters that is already on KRN2, so i do not think its really that of a widespread problem

My father is still waiting for his update codes even though his neighbours got theirs two years ago.

I phoned City of Cape Town and all they did was confirm that the meter still had to be updated and that he must wait for the codes.

Is there any other way to expedite this?

Eskom dodgy employees is going to have a wonderful chrismas. All these bribes they going to rack in soon to sort outs these meters.

Just let it expire and go off grid. Lot of people already can't afford to keep their lights on the whole month anyway, the 'disadvantages' of solar are in fact the norm for them already.
