I think the Hellkom product won against the local competitiors like Sintech and iBurst because it's the most reliable etc but it paled in comparison with international standards

Well done RPM and MyADSL community and many thanks to ITWeb for their continued support.

One suggestion:
Could we try and compare to more broadband offerings in third world countries (especially African) in our next release of this document? I'm pretty sure Telkom will try and discredit these finding by using the ol' "but you cannot compare our services to first world country offerings".

Well done.

I suggest that the report is submitted to ICASA as well as supplementary information.

One could ask that ICASA requires Telkom to justify its charges in relation to both developed and developing countries.

RPM I second this suggestion.
As said, Telkom's standard line is "compare 3rd world services with 3rd world services".

AFAIK, Mauritius and Egypt have much cheaper DSL than here. It would be great to see how they compare to Telscum DSL using the MyADSL algorithms.

Hi Adlo, BB_Matt, Martin, Kaspaas, IC

Thanks for the vote of confidence and kind words. As I have mentioned many times before this is a team effort! Without the help from its members and frequent visits by members and guests MyADSL will not gain nearly as much attention. It’s you guys that read the site, help with testing, spread the word and keep this forum active. We are only the guys putting it together and forwarding it to the media…

Regards,

RPM

Ye - check this for Mauritian ADSL: http://www.telecomplus.net/adsl_tariffs_home.htm
Wanadoo ADSL Home 512 is exactly the same speed as our 512, except no cap, and costs R531.58 if you do the conversion at today's exchange rate.

As for Egypt, check this: http://www.internetegypt.com/DSL.html
2048/512 DSL is 640 Egyptian Pounds!!!! That's R659.54 at todays exchange. The installation fee is just over R100 once off. You also get the option of static IPs instead of dynamic, where they give you 8 statics for an extra R80 or so per month. No Cap either. 512 DSL is the equiv of R214 a month.

It really is sickening. On guy who posts on my forum lives in Ghana and get reckons DSL is cheaper there than here, and not capped. This is beyond a joke.

Hi, if you can give a good estimate for cost (US dollars pls!), real download, upload speed, capping, latency, reliability (downtime frequency), etc, of broadband offerings in those countries, we can give an estimate of their score, and compare to SA.

To get good results, however, we will have to get real speed tests etc etc.

I agree that it will be very interesting to compare those countries. It may just be a bit difficult to get speed testers etc there ...

If we take the Mauritius price (startup included), take it as uncapped, and we keep all the rest the same as our Telkom 512, then this service gets a score of 36% in the international comparison. Not too good internationally, but it beats SA services easily if our assumptions are reasonable (best SA service gets 26%).

But maybe it is not a good idea to calculate these hypothetical scores; they are useless. Hopefully we can find real data for these countries, and include a good comparison for the next round.

Even if the numbers are not too much to count on, I think its really pathetic that a tiny island nation like Mauritius, which probably sees 90% of its traffic through undersea cable, can offer a better service than our country's providers...freakin shocking.

Of course as longas the ANC connections continue to be able to line their pockets on Telscum profits, true competition is a dream...

Hello SantaBla and welcome to myadsl.

If you're paying 1500 mauritian rupees then you should be very thankful. We're now paying well over double what you're paying for a 512k connection and we are capped at a total of 3GB (up and down) per month. When our ADSL first came out a few years ago, we were paying 3 times more than you now pay. So, you are definitely not paying more than any other country, we are. So, count your blessings.
