J&J vaccine reduces chance of getting Covid-19 infection by half - SA study

Johnson & Johnson’s Covid-19 vaccine cuts the risk of getting infected with the disease by about half, according to the latest results of a trial involving almost half a million health workers in South Africa.

The vast majority of the breakthrough infections were mild, Glenda Gray, co-leader of the study known as Sisonke, said in an interview, citing unpublished data from the trial, which had earlier shown the shot’s effectiveness against severe illness.

Like all Covid vaccines, J&J’s was intended and tested for its ability to prevent Covid hospitalizations and deaths.

So down from the initially reported 66% effective down to 50% effective from infection?

"The final results which include three sets of data from private insurers and the government, will be submitted for publication in days, said Gray"

If you are days away from submitting the data, what is the rush for the press release?
I am likely to get asked questions regarding this vaccine on the basis of this article. Now I must answer those questions from a press article without having looked the data in the eye.

Eh everyone wants their 15 minutes of fame.

I have 22 days to go for being fully vaccinated... Though I am sure that there will be Pfizer booster shots, I am curious with what will be considered as an appropriate mixer shot for J&J in our sphere of the pandemic?

I'd be interested to see results from a study on how the Pfizer vaccine reduces infection probability in SA, seeing as we extend the period between doses to six weeks. Much of the world has given the second dose in three weeks and a study has found eight weeks to be quite optimal. Perhaps a greater prevention rate with Pfizer in SA perhaps?

This is planned also to evaluate boosting in some J&J HCW's.

But some people also get your symptoms from the 2jab one .... and others no symptoms from J&J, so it's hard to tell beforehand.

Actually if you're not in hospital, that would be counted as mild, people seem to think mild means you barely feel it. But it actually is basically you're not in hospital, you're still functioning even if it's at an impaired state.
The fact that you're still posting on here means it's not serious.

In that case, I had covid in July. Was not leker for a few days. I'm 100% now with no lasting after effects.

BTW, not vaccinated

Only 70% effective against hospitalization? That's not good...

I wonder if there were other contributing factors. But 3 out of 10 vaccinated people ending up in hospital won't be good enough to prevent future waves and hospitals being overrun.
