There is something in the toxic moral atmosphere that has rolled over South Africa in the past few weeks that is reminiscent of that which prevailed after Thabo Mbeki's ascent to the state presidency in 1999. Even though he was taking over from a living icon, Mbeki was nonetheless seen to embody the promise of a new dawn. His government would be decisive, less tolerant of incompetence than Mandela had been, and finally set about delivering. Political writers and commentators fell over themselves praising Mbeki's brilliance and his statesmanlike demeanour and approach. The columnist Xolela Mangcu wrote that, despite its pedestrian delivery, the serious content of Mbeki's inauguration speech made "tears well up" in his eyes.

Despite now being the largest opposition party in parliament the DP was stripped of its place on the Judicial Services Commission and the chairmanship of the Standing Committee on Public Accounts. It was also subjected to a campaign of demonisation which culminated in the labelling, in parliament, of the DP as the political home of "neo-Nazism" and "white fascism." The message was delivered by a former DP MP who had defected to the ANC a short while before (and who was subsequently rewarded with an ambassadorship). I remember thinking then that a ruling clique which thought it could use debased propaganda of that kind against a Jewish South African was really capable of anything.

There is an underlying theme in much of the anti-Zille rhetoric - dripping as it is in gross misogyny and racialism. This is that no-one, especially no woman, and more especially no white woman, should think themselves entitled to criticise the president's personal conduct. The ANC alliance appears to be trying to dish out a lesson to her, and South Africa more generally. This is that from now on everyone should grovel before the feet of the new big man. As MKMVA put it, in a statement, they were going to the Western Cape to "apply the necessary pressure to the little premier who is too big for her boots."

Speaking of not being allowed to criticise, I just heard on the news that the 2nd biggest arsehole on the planet, Charles Nqakula, is going to be Zuma's political advisor. Fantastic.

Good point in that last bit you quote. It sums it all up - Zille wasn't being nice, or smart - but the ANC's reaction is far more worrying.

Interesting, thanks.

Unfortunately most here all seem to suffer from collective amnesia conveniently forgetting their infatuation with Mbeki and the ANC.

Anybody who didn't buy into "Madiba Magic" was labeled racist, fascist etc so nothing new there. Also the majority of the population groveled at the feet of Madiba voluntarily so there was no need to teach them a lesson.

EDIT: The link is taking forever to load

Take it you weren't one of them? Exactly how old are you and how did your life change so much when we became a democracy?

Mandela served one thing and one thing only... to escort SA into a peace transition (with FW de Klerk), which also escalated SA in the world as peace leader

Mbeki did alot to grow the Economy... but very little to stop crime, help education and healthcare... but maybe applied too much of his time on African and not enough on SA

Zuma... with the lowest expectations... can logically only get better results than expected... no matter how much he succeeds... will always never have been worthy
He will forever have to sit with the fact of being labeled a criminal & dodging the law... being showerhead... largely due to not thinking before talking (& sleeping around)

He'd be wise to accept help from Zille... cause he's going to need all the help he can get... and just hope the two parties can help SA... and stop bickering
If he is going to rely on the close-nit idiots (or even associate) with likes of Mantashe, Malema, Duarte, etc.... he is in a lot more trouble than he ever hoped for
Getting rid of those... who are more foolish/stupid than himself when they open their mouth... might just get him a little bit of respect... and then we can talk

Other than that... politics in SA is somewhat good for stress levels... and refining who's who... who's logical & who's not... but most of all... who's the idiots?
In other words... a true case of the Good, the Bad and the Ugly ... (edit) or was it ... Dumb, Dumber and Dumbest

The point is, a bunch of has-been terrorists all sharing a single brain cell cannot function, let alone govern, in a civilized, western society. This scenenario is fraught with danger and will fail, like all other "liberated countries " in Africa.
