It is entirely a delaying tactic, but the courts can't shoot it down out of hand, they have to let the process play out unfortunately otherwise it opens the doors to challenges on a technical level.

The Judge made the right choice by setting the date to no later than the 26th. It is called in urgency, and Zuma have to make his plea on that day. The question is, what then? Only time will tell.

Zuma have always evoked a technicality to play his Stalingrad game, but the postponement needs to be cut as short as possible. At least this has been shown here, but it is both Zuma and Thales trying to cast doubt on the NPA. They are always ready, but always have something else to deliberate prior to proceeding... They sure are ready to delay time and time again.

Zuma have played this hand; Thales will play the next.

Yeah of course, they will just keep playing the cards until a judge does somehow find a proper technically legit way of putting the kibosh on all of them and just moving the case forward.

International news:

Jacob Zuma corruption trial in South Africa adjourned shortly after opening

Former president, 79, faces charges of fraud, racketeering and money laundering

A long-delayed corruption trial of Jacob Zuma has opened in South Africa but was adjourned almost immediately for nine days.

Zuma, who was president from 2009 to 2018, faces charges of fraud, racketeering and money laundering relating to a $2.5bn (£1.98bn) deal to buy European military hardware to upgrade South Africa’s armed forces in 1994.

The 79-year-old denies the charges against him. He has alleged his case has been prejudiced by lengthy delays in bringing the matter to trial and political interference.

Lawyers for the former president are applying for the lead state prosecutor to stand down on undisclosed grounds, and the postponement is to allow their request to be prepared.

Zuma has been accused of using delaying tactics to avoid the trial.

Patricia de Lille, the minister of public works and infrastructure and a key witness in the case, said that after 22 years a further week’s delay was bearable.

“We have all been waiting for this day so South Africans can hear the truth and former president Jacob Zuma can put his side of the case … We are all equal before the law,” she said outside the court.

...

Analysts said Zuma’s refusal to appear before the inquiry was one of the most significant tests of South Africa’s democratic institutions for many years.

The Daily Maverick has a good article on today's proceedings,

For a man who wants his day in court, he is nothing short of possessed to make sure it never happens.

He wants to be prosecuted by someone who don't want him to be sentenced. He wants his case heard by someone who don't want him to be sentenced. Only then will he willingly have his day in court. This picture has long been painted.

Just wait until he also pegs Judge Koen. I see Koen and Mogoeng had a disagreement a while ago, nothing to do with Zuma, but we all know Zuma’s position towards Mogoeng (who is now on ‘permanent’ leave) and Zondo, maybe Zuma likes his chances with Koen. I looked into Koen’s historical rulings, and he seems to be really thorough and due diligent, perhaps this is the reason Zuma's legal council is trying to shorten the time allowed.

This trial is set down until June 20th. 8 Days are a big slice set aside to have this special plea heard.

yip, for a man who wanted to have his day in court. Last card he will play will be health, when the leech is 90 year old.
And the foundation is laid of the next defense tactic. This noise will become louder and louder as the time goes on and eventually the cretin will actually get sick and coin it.

There are people I know bad things about but the world would end (before I say anything), so I keep quiet because I don't want to let down the ANC.

I know many criminals but I will not talk unless I am prosecuted - said Leader of the Moral Degeneration movement.

I am sure he DOES know very bad things about the likes of Gigaba, Weekend Special, Faith Muthambi, NDZ, etc. etc. etc.

Blah blah blah Jacob... You've been threatening this for years, so spill the beans or just shut the fsck up and face the music for your crimes you corrupt traitorous twat.
He may have known something about the comrades that were with him in exile but those have since passed on. I don't think he has anything on Ramaphosa.

Ah shame man, poor old man, so senile and unaware of anything that is going on around him.

I think we should let this one slide, for his health sake, I mean he only contributed to 10 years of rot and complete degradation of our country..

Only 10? He's been knee-deep in mud most of the past 25 years.

If the old man wasn't prepared to spend his last days in jail maybe the oupa shouldn't have been so corrupt, ne!

Or, why does such a rich old man (earning salary of R3mil/a) still steal? Sies man, ga!
