Three convicted cash-in-transit robbers have been sentenced to an effective 12 years in prison for the May 2013 robbery of an armoured vehicle.
Siyanda Xawuka, 34, Dumisani Ngudle, 39, and Yongama Ndolombo, 35, were sentenced at the Khayelitsha Priority Court on Monday.
During the robbery, a group of men overpowered security guards who were transporting money intended for Sassa pay-outs at a community hall in Nyanga, said Western Cape Hawks spokesperson Zinzi Hani.
They made off with an undisclosed amount of cash and hijacked a school minibus as a getaway vehicle as they fled.
Following a shootout with police, five people were arrested. The fourth accused died while on bail, and the fifth was acquitted.
