What is the best (and obviously cheapest, preferably free! :D) Java development environment available these days?

Haven't used straight Java for a couple of years now... am more used to C, C++, C#, Delphi, (D)HTML, JavaScript and UNIX C-scripting nowadays! But need Java for a new project...

eclipse gets my vote as well.

if you are doing non-J2SE dev work, have a look at the eclipse plugins. eclipseME is great for J2ME development.

Am trying to download it again! The first time the download was corrupt. :(

Guess what amased (actually angered!) me now: downloading from University of Stellenbosch at 2.7KB/s (10+ hours), but downloading from Canada at almost 25KB/s (1.2 hours)...

Eclipse... and not just for Java. I use it for PHP but there's plugins for just about everything under the sun (Python, Ruby, Perl, XML, CSS, C++ etc)

Forget about the local download sites, they're pathetic. Use the UK, Switzerland or the US if you want it quick.

Agreed, I get good speeds when downloading from Switzerland.
