The Bible does say that the earth will be destroyed the second time with fire and the time seems close at hand. Yes. Conquest for land. The byzantine empire wanted a buffer between them and the Muslims so they asked the Pope to take Jerusalem. Word got out and a bunch of peasants ransacked everything and anything on their way almost there.
The first "real" crusade was a bit more successful.

It isn't much different than any other war.
