Where can one get valuations done? Will any jewellery store be able to assist? Does anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks!

Most reputable jewellery stores could help. If it is a ring with a diamond or other valuable stone in it, don't let them 'send it away' for valuation or you may get back something worth a tad less than what you sent in ;) In addition, don't let them disappear into the back of the shop with the item.

Depending on where you are located, I can recommend a good, reliable & honest manufacturing jeweller in Pretoria.

Also don't expect to obtain the valuation for free, most places are going to charge a fee for their time & the certificate.

Thanks. I'm in northern Johannesburg. There are plenty of stores around, any mall has half a dozen. I was just wondering if some are more equal than others?

So a shop without a back room then? ;)

In that case here

Should be around R180

ERm, not quite. The cost of the valuation and Certificate will be no less than 10% the actual value of the piece. And that is why jewelers love doing valuation. Generally a bloody rip off! They end up getting thousands of rands for giving you a little piece of paper and looking at your gems under a microscope!

Well I got a valuation from Gerald Francis Jewellers 2 weeks ago and it was sure as hell not 10% of the value. I would have told them to shove it.

Well it can't hurt to ask upfront before it is done :)

(And yes, I won't pay 4k for you to tell me it's worth 40k )

Engagement ring. a Year old... Based in Jhb. It is a white Gold with Emeralds
That sounds like R30k. Please transfer R3k worth of Bitcoin to my address for the valuation.

Like it said 8 years ago, probably still the jewelry stores. I have a guy in Centurion for this, which I would recommend, if you are interested, PM me.

Just because it's valued at a certain price doesn't mean you'll ever actually get that price. A friend had a white gold chain with a massively expensive jewel on it was claimed to be valued at 130k. But no jeweler or private person would pay that.

Holy thread necro!

I'm in a situation where I need a ring evaluated in Durban, near Musgrave. Can anyone refer me to a jeweller in Musgrave & surrounds that offers this service?

Please and thanks.
