ATTENDING: Telkom Engineers <<<<<<<<< Right there

I am fine... wonder why? Not slow at all

from 2pm today I've had slow to no intl. I called Mweb to check if I'd been given a capped IP address, they said no there's a prob on the Joburg side.

I never believe a thing these guys say and did a tracert www.ebay.com it does 13 hops through to sprintlink.net but fails after that

Is sprintlink.net US based? And should I call Mweb back to tell them they're (once again) lieing to me?

Thats probably because you are in Cape Town. As far as I know most international bandwidth comes from the SAT 3 cable which terminates in Cape Town and the MyADSL website is hosted by Hetzner in Cape Town. So this probably mostly affects Jo'burg people.

As far as i know it dosnt matter, all international connectivity is switched in rosebank, shouldnt matter if ur closer to the sat 3 or not.

Thats an interesting point that is quite difficult to get an answer for but I can't believe Telkom would waste bandwidth and latency by making ALL Cape Town traffic go to Jo'burg and then back to Cape Town, it wouldn't make financial sense to do that. (I reckon Telkom are wankers but not idiots to implement a 3000 km round trip just for fun to Cape Town users) I've done some experiments that may be able to shed some light on the telkom setup. I'm in CT and I just did a traceroute with Neotrace pro to www.google.com and it says my route went via 2 telkom-ipnet nodes in Cape Town straight to a node in New York. Of coarse this maybe inaccurate because this is pure tcp/ip routing and you can't see the routing on the Telkom ATM network. I'm sure it's right because it only took 13ms to get to the last SA node before hitting the NY node which I believe is way to quick to do 3000km. I also VNC'd into my dads machine in jo'burg and did a ping to the same google sever ip and he constantly got about 40ms longer ping times than i did in Cape Town which would be about right for the extra round trip to Cape Town.
