INEFFICIENT information flows in the job markets may be one of the factors contributing to youth unemployment, says Lebo Lehutso-Phooko editor of Reserve Bank publication Labour Market Frontiers
“It is very expensive to search for a job in SA,” says Lehutso-Phooko, who also heads up a small labour markets research unit in the bank’s research department. “And in a situation where most of the people you know are unemployed, you can’t look to your social network for much help in finding a job.”
She is concerned that the job market is inefficient in the sense that the information flows to match job seekers with opportunities are lacking, and that this may contribute to unemployment being worse in certain groups which may also lack job-seeking skills such as interview techniques.
