The motorway will be closed in between the Crown Interchange and Maritzburg Street likely until October
The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has announced that they will be closing parts of the M2 motorway for rehabilitation from February 28, citing “structural defects” as the reason.

According to the JRA, the safety of the Selby section of the M2 bridge could not be assured and therefore had to be closed.

A statement from the Johannesburg transport department says Joburg mayor Herman Mashaba had previously raised concerns about the Karzene and Selby sections of the M2 bridge, which he said “posed a danger to road users” and needed to be closed for repairs.

The motorway will be closed between the Crown Interchange and Maritzburg Street in Johannesburg.

The closure of the motorway – expected to last until October 2019 – will affect several on-ramps, which will have to be closed, and affected motorists are advised to seek alternative routes.

Mashaba has posted a link to a live video feed of him brief media on the closure.

This is what happens when you don't prioritise maintenance. Have to now shutdown an entire section of road because you let things get to the point of collapse before you acted.

Also, kill me, please. I use the back roads exclusively and whenever there are problems with the M2/M1 my 30-min afternoon trip home doubles and triples.

isnt the fixing done by the DA mayor? the ANC let it get this bad before somebody (DA) stepped in?

That is exactly what happened.

I have a substantive duty to act in the best interest of residents. The current maintenance backlog and poor condition of the City's bridges requires over R6bn in expenditure," Mashaba said.

That does not happen in 2-years.

Thought about getting a bike, but unfortunately I see far too many morons on the road. I recently got a dashcam due to the kind of stuff I encounter.

I'll happily face the morons in exchange for an extra 2 hours a day. Yip, cut my commute time with at least an hour each way.

By just leaving the bridge to collapse?

I'd gladly be crushed by a collapsing bridge than spend an extra 30 - 60 soul-destroying minutes in traffic for 8-months.

I experienced this towards the end of last year when they closed a few lanes on the M1, forcing people on to the same back roads they are going to be diverting the M2 traffic. My journey, depending on volume, was increased by 30 mins to an hour and I only travel 17.5 km.

Right so fix it, and maintain it.
Um, there is a vast difference between repairs and maintenance. Repairs are those extremely expensive things that you do after you have ignored maintenance and pulled the asset through your backside.
That's too white man thing...
Maintenance is relatively cheap, small things done continuously in order to avoid expensive repairs. Undoubtedly a white man thing.

I think that the media miight be losing applying the term “structural defects”. In general that means that the structure has a design flaw.

It might be a case that the structure is under reinforced where the amount of peak traffic is exceeding the designed load. I would love to see the Engineer’s report.
