Eish, this is going to make my life difficult, I guess its better to have it fixed than die in a bridge collapse.

Might just work more from home.

oh really... so you mean, the government took over some good infrastructure, saw the bill needed for yearly maintenance and thought, why spend that, it works - we can just 'use' that money for something else ...

And then we act all surprised?

Traffic on M1 S Double Decker was insane yesterday. I can see it when I cross Nelson Mandela bridge, so just carried in straight through town and Booysens reserve. This morning, the M1 N was backed up from Booysens before Crown at 05:30 already.

The cost of incompetence, corruption and a general lack of understanding of how to run a country

Just like Cape Town every day from 15h00... That is normal for us. Welcome to our world.

When I said "a mess", I meant "more of a mess than usual". It took me 20min to drive 100m today, that should've taken me 5min. Also, Google Maps took me on a 7km detour (to avoid snarl-ups)

It was tongue in cheek...

I saw all over social media yesterday that the CBD was a disaster zone due to road closures and the heavy rains.

Not enough Metro police to handle traffic congestion caused by M2 Bridge closure

Minnaar said the Metro police department has deployed 70 traffic wardens and 80 officers in most intersections. Furthermore, the four major banks in the city have provided 10 security guards each to disperse at various intersections. However, he said the number of intersections exceeded the number of human resources available.

“We are working with banks and businesses in the city to provide security guards to perform security functions. We will deploy more officers who are performing visible policing in some areas of the city to Anderson Street especially, on peak hours,” said Minnaar.

And then this bit. Metro can't even fulfill its own mandate as they will be outsourcing traffic management.

The City of Johannesburg recently announced that it was completing a competitive bidding process to appoint a new private partner to enhance traffic management services in the city. The new partner is expected to be revealed in the next few months. While the rehabilitation of the M2 bridge is anticipated to be complete by October, Minnaar said the appointment of the new partner may bring relief to the current traffic congestion as it has prospects of producing more manpower.

“We are looking forward to the appointment. It will help a lot in supplementing the shortage that we are currently experiencing during the closure of the bridge,” added Minnaar.

Most of article behind a paywall

Three months later, but is the M2 highway project at a standstill?

There appeared to be no construction workers on site this week at the bridge between the Crown Interchange and Maritzburg Street on the M2 highway in Joburg - despite it being closed since February for rehabilitation.

Instead, a visit to the site by Times Select this week revealed that homeless people – who were evicted before work started on the site – are back living underneath the bridge.

A leaked document from the City of Johannesburg seems to suggest that no work has been done in the three months

M2 bridge rehab project is on schedule for completion end October - JRA

The M2 bridge rehabilitation will be finished by the end of October.
This was the assurance from the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) on Thursday. The agency said it would stick to its initial deadline in rehabilitating the M2 between the Crown Interchange and Maritzburg Street, which had been been closed since February.
The comment comes after reports that there had been no work taking place on the site.

JRA's spokesperson Siyabonga Nodu denied the reports, saying a quarter of the work had been done and that construction was still under way.
"The demolition of the failed bridge structural element is at 90% and the installation of the jacking system at Selby Bridge has been completed," he said.
Nodu made the comment during a walkabout on the west-bound and east-bound sections of the bridge. He said the milling and exposing of the existing asphalt to allow for further drainage investigation was under way.
"The overall project is on schedule and will be completed by October 30 2019 as planned," he said. The bridge was closed after mayor Herman Mashaba raised concerns last year over the stability of the Karzene and Selby sections of the M2 bridge, which posed a threat to road users.

I suggest you all stock up on audio books. You could listen to at least two books a day for the next few months, while stuck in traffic. Also try classical music.

Do yourself a favour; go spend some time in the UK and watch how slowly those guys on construction sites work. And comparing against Japan is unrealistic; even the US construction workers don't work that quickly.
