In a statement, the University of Pretoria (UP) said the actions smacked of “political grandstanding”.

According to the metro, the UP’s High-Performance Centre owed it R34 million. UP paid its disputed bill shortly before the metro could switch off its services.

UP criticised the city’s approach and claimed it had attempted to resolve the billing for months.

“Our proactive attempts to engage with the City have been ignored,” said the university.

“Despite this, we have committed to pay the alleged outstanding amount, pending the outcome of the dispute.”

The university claimed it made an immediate payment to prevent interruption, despite not receiving prior notice or a detailed account, which it requested from the council months ago.
“Fortunately, the university was able to pay the amount as money was set aside when we became aware of the disagreement last year,” the university said.
If I were embroiled in a billing dispute with the municipality, I would spend that set aside R34m on going off grid for electricity (water is obviously not as easy).

The City of Tshwane tweet that is quoted does smack of politicking:

I dont defend Soweto easily but your own Government, Public hospitals etc that does not pay electricity and yet they want to come into soweto as an example and come and lecture people about overloading the grid and stealing electricity.

Proceeds to cut them off randomly when load in the area is high yet the very same Government does not pay either??

Only 4% of Alex residents paying for electricity - City Power

Sort that out - I dare you.
I am moving to alex. Life seems to be nice in the township. You get everything for free and pay close to nothing for rent. But man those rodents.

They did see it. Hence they are fixing it.

What did the corrupt and incompetent ANC do.....in every municipality that these clowns run?
No, they did not. For the last about six years the DA was in charge of Tswhane and did absolutely nothing to collect outstanding debts from the state departments. Only the vulnerable residents were targeted, to the extend that we were not allowed to be more than a day late.

It is only now, when Escom threatens Tswane for being hugely in arrears that the are politically grandstanding. And they are making a meal of it, already lost their first court case and was forced to reconnect services.

So Eskom only threatens the DA run municipalities?
