Gas explosions on the other hand result from leaks, either from the valve the hose or the appliance. If enough gas has leaked before an ignition source is found (and providing the flammability range is reached) these explosions can level structures.
Wasn't there recently a big kaboom due to leak(ed) gas in the news?

I think gas is (a lot?) more expensive than electricity for cooking.
I have been using a gas hob for about twenty three years now. I also have a two plate ceran hob next to it for when gas runs out unexpectedly. I cannot say whether it costs more or not that would be a difficult test as so many other things affect monthly bill such as aircon and pool pump.

But it is way more convenient. My domestic worker would be in a better position to answer that question. She has both a two plate gas and two plate electric. She had the gas before she got pre-paid electricity but still retains it and uses the gas to cook unless she runs out unexpectedly. She operates on a tighter budget so I am pretty sure that means the gas is a bit cheaper, but its hard to be sure.

About 110KWh worth of energy in a 9kg cylinder so that's R280/110KWh = R2.54\KWh (it gets worse with higher gas prices)
Gas stovetops about 30-40% efficiency so R6.35\KWh heated for gas cooking

There's definitely a premium for convenience of not depending on Eskom

(before you say it normal electric coil stoves are around 65% efficiency so that's like ~R4.20 per KWh heated napkin math)

I am sure it would depend on electricity & gas prices in any country but in SA, I would say gas is cheaper to cook than electricity at the moment.
Gas prices have gone up from R185/9kg bottle 5 years (or so?) ago, to R340/9kg last month.

I installed a gas cooker (4 burners and oven) in December of 2021. My electricity consumption actually went up for the month following the change from electric cooking to gas, but I tried to rationalize that away by saying that it was because I was on leave so I was using more electricity being at home that month.

I ran out of gas and for a variety of reasons didn't get a refill at the end of August 2022. My electricity consumption from end of August to end of September 2022 went up perhaps 25-30kWh (I don't have the figure written down with me right now).

Between December 2021 and end of August 2022 my gas cooking consumption was fairly consistent at around 2 months per bottle, that's R170/month in gas at the current prices.

That's a pot?

Also get a two burner. Makes life a lot easier.

I'm planning on getting one soon. This current one was actually for camping, but it's used in the house now as we're back in the stone age thanks to Ramamoegoe and his friend AdR.

Yeah we used ours for camping as well. But at home you tend to do a bit more so we got a two burner for when we cook outside

SO wants a two burner induction now. Those things are also amaze balls

induction tops can be gas based or is it dual mode ? I only used induction once - don't think it will be as good as gas for indian cooking.

Gas hob for all our cooking

The induction is electric. He uses it. Like he uses the air fryer. And the pressure cooker. And the other stuff he insists we accumulate even though we might use it once a year

We've even got one of those material thingys you finish stuff in. It's never been used. He refuses to get rid if it o_O

I have 3 gas heating sources, one is fitted with cooker top connected to a small 3kg cylinder (easy to boil kettle etc) , then a 2 plate flat unit that I use for pots etc. connected to a 5kg. This is set up in my laundry room which runs off from the kitchen so preparing meals is simple.
