Joburg residents in for a nasty electricity price shock

The City of Johannesburg has implemented its new electricity tariffs for the 2019/2020 period, which include a major change to prepaid electricity pricing.

The schedule of approval electricity tariffs for the new period shows that prepaid electricity users will be required to pay a R200 surcharge each month from 1 July 2019.

So 13% electricity increase (which will guaranteed be more than that anyway) plus a 13% increase on my levies.
Along with the insane food pricing these days, my insurance increases and whatever the f**k is going on with the fuel price.

Lekker man.
I wonder what the weather is like in Orania this time of year?

This feels a bit like the municipality realising that many of the middle-class-electricity-bill-payers were thinking to escape from their cash cow status by going prepaid...

South African cities and Eskom:
IF YOU DON'T REDUCE YOUR ELECTRICITY AND WATER USAGE YOU WILL RUN OUT OF BOTH

The middle class:
(Reduces electricity and water usage)

Also the people of Soweto thank you for your brave contribution to paying for their electricity.

This,
I've been moaning about the fact that I can't get prepaid at my place for ages now.
I guess it's time to let that "dream" go... seems it was all a trap.

HOW CAN WE PAY FOR SERVICES IF WE DON'T TAX YOU EVEN MORE!

Actually a pretty good summary of the status quo.

Still works out R290 cheaper, at the moment.

1) Increase is way above NERSA approved tariffs.
2) Supposed to be a pre-paid service consumption based service, the R200 is not pre-paid.
3) Makes billing difficult for tenants as you now have two bills.

If CoJ need R200 more per month, then add it to the rate.

Suggest all residents complain to Herman Mashaba this is an unfair tax.
Twitter is a good place to make your objections public.

The only account from that list that will respond is "CityofJoburgZA". Even then they're unlikely to raise your concern to any meaningful forum.

The only place to raise this sort of thing is on a billboard on the N1 where it raises the kind of publicity the DA can't hide from. Trust me, if they can cover up that Sandton (143,5 km²) has no working fire engines, they can and will shift blame for the electicity increases.

City of Joburg quietly reverses new prepaid surcharge

The City of Joburg has quietly reversed a R200 per month municipal surcharge for prepaid electricity customers that came into effect on July 1. The surcharge was to have been added to municipal rates bills this month, meaning that residential users would not see what is effectively a substantial increase in the cost of electricity until the end of the month.

Have to make these issues public.
DA needs to wake up.
Not good enuf that we don't have working fire engines.

Northern Cape Premier Dr. Zamani Saul’s decision to buy 27 new ambulances instead of new luxury vehicles for his MECs should inspire competition amongst leaders to do better for their communities.
