The aged coal-powered station (built in 1957) technically has the capacity to generate 600 MW.

According to records Kelivin has never produced more than 200 MW.

and the unrest in Soweto, no schools tomorrow or anything, maybe I misheard

Eskom says it won't be able to meet the demands of the residents of Orlando West in Soweto.

The residents are demanding Eskom to remove prepaid electricity meters. They want to pay a flat rate of no more than R400 per household per month for electricity.

Residents have been barricading streets and say they won't allow their children to attend school on Thursday.

Eskom's Gauteng Manager, Bandile Jack, says they are bound by the National Energy Regulator, Nersa on their tariffs. "We don’t do flat rates.

We’ve got tariffs that are provided by Nersa - that is being paid throughout Eskom supply areas by all customers. So, we can’t make concessions for certain customers that are outside that Nersa regulation process.

Residents of Soweto have to pay the tariffs that are paid by all customers in SA."

Meanwhile, the residents have vowed to continue protesting until their demands for a flat rate are met. They say the current tariffs are too high. They have barricaded some of the most famous streets in Soweto, including Vilakazi and Khumalo.

I see that NewAge article was sourced from the SABC.

Is that really the standard of English we want to see broadcast to all?
I' m thinking particularly of children, now, who will grow up thinking that "The residents are demanding Eskom to remove prepaid electricity meters." is correct usage of the language.

So confused. I thought all previous articles said 90% of soweto don't pay for electricity. Is it just 10% barricading streets?

Also good job on keeping your kids dof, education is overrated anyway, you don't want to be too smart otherwise you will never make king president of SA.

They're trying to install prepaid meters for the 90%...

I'm pretty sure that enough 'senior cadres' have whined that they are unable to enjoy their largesse in the dark and that City Power needs to keep the lights on in parts of Forest Town and Bryanston irrespective. The trouble is that there are people about who will point out that the lights are staying on in Eccleston Crescent but not in Riverclub even though both are in the same 'Block'.

Hence a 'new' story about not having to turn off the entire block because of efficiencies gained elsewhere.

Great initiative. They could even charge a reduced rate per kW during periods of limiting. Lol
