Joburg vs Eskom prepaid electricity price shocker

A storm of protest is brewing after City Power put up its prepaid electricity prices to the majority of its poor and indigent customers by six to 12 times the inflation rate, and well above Eskom’s prepaid tariff rates for the poor.

City Power is a company owned 100% by the City of Johannesburg, responsible for most of the electricity distribution and retail sales of electricity to residential customers in the Johannesburg
metropolitan area.

What's missing from the article is how many prepaid customers CoJ has.
I've been told that there are ~275,000 prepaid.
~275,000 * R230pm = R63.2m per month or R759m per year with no benefit for customers.
Also the R230pm is split R80.50 for Service Fee.
The service fee is for reading your prepaid meter - what a scam.

CoJ needs to disconnect all non-payers and illegal connections - but that results in lost votes and protests.
Only 4% of Alex and other townships pay for electricity.
This is why they need to introduce this tax on compliant customers.
Not fair.

This is just a new tax and we should Kenya CoJ.

Yup, I mean that spectacular 2 hours load shedding stuff up of theirs.
Then they said it'll only be during stage 5 and up and it was still basically like being stage 8.
Took almost an entire month before they clicked

And who runs Johannesburg.

Al Jamah is your leader. Look like Johannesburg is falling apart.

Isnt the water infrastructure falling apart too?

The poor don't pay this fee
True, they just use illegal connections.

If you're referring to indigent users, the city's indigent register doesn't reconcile who those who registered, and there's also those who aren't registered.

And even then, if you're earning R6,100 and are no longer indigent, you're not exactly swimming in money...

According to the City you're swimming in money at 6001
