Yes it is.

technically, by his definition - "an environment where a person only encounters information or opinions that reflect and reinforce their own" - it isn't.

we have laboriously entertained 350 pages of tropes, talking points, and yelling about how unbelievably wrong we are, largely consisting of weird accusations unsupported by anything, insults about biscuits, and bold statements like "you don't understand x because Kamyinnism". i think if you go back a bit, you'll find more substantive back and forth. it didn't help at all but it's there.

that said, I'm not really too worried. the thread celebrates the defeat of Donald Trump by Joe Biden. it's not like there's likely to be a meeting of minds about that. just lots and lots of tears.

That whole "majority" thing is your definition of an echo chamber
no it is THE definition, an echo chamber with zero opposing view is practically impossible without blocking access

e.g. go dig up the political correctness in universities thread, masses of students and lecturers at various universities just pushing the same viewpoint, inevitably somebody photobombs into an interview and voices a different opinion and is then swiftly removed by force from the conversation

not an echo chamber according to you, there was one single voice of dissent for a few seconds before being forced outside

that's not how this works, majority is how it works in practise, sure not just a small majority, we don't have a small majority in this thread fyi

And yet you've been an active participant in these threads for the last 4 years and nobody has tried to silence you or have you thrown out, a fact you bragged about a few pages back. Victimhood complex is real yo

Which is why the term "echo chamber" is only really applicable in the context of social media sites that use algorithms to present users with information that is chosen, based on their past behavioral patterns, to guarantee a maximum expenditure of their attention - The stock in trade of add driven social media. Which happens to be information that A: Angers/frightens them B: Confirms their biases.

Edit: Or is curated to the same effect.

Not open Forums.

Sorry if the majority does not agree with you here. There is nothing I can do about that.

oh the irony, two of my posts today in this thread were just deleted fyi
and 'ol greg loves to throw out vague threats of getting them deleted

censorship = echo chamber

me being one of a handful of active participants among an ocean of ... what's the nice way to put it? ... the hive mind ... does not disprove the overwhelming majority

Nor am I, people across the world are also cheering the deplatforming of Trump and thousands of others

I'm sure they believe what they're left with is "balanced views" and "healthy debate", oblivious to the fact that that is impossible when you only chat to those you agree with.

Agreeing with me has nothing to do with it. The majority here agree with each other, THAT is the symptom.
So now this thread is bad? Because it has a symptom of your definition of what exactly? Being an echo chamber I assume...
Still don't agree with that whole majority thing. Nor even the relevance of the term "echo chamber" to public forums.
I have been reprimanded for posts as well you know. The forums have guidelines people have to abide by.

So now this thread is bad?
Oh no, not at all. Echo chambers in general are bad if things like debate and challenging viewpoints are important to you.

It happens to be very important to me, but I don't come to this thread expecting any of that, a dumpster fire has its own beauty, I stop and watch them sometimes.
