Johannesburg proposes big changes to load-shedding schedules

The power-distribution utility in South Africa’s commercial capital is in talks with the state electricity company to reduce the duration of outages in the city of more than 5 million people.

City Power officials proposed that the duration of the blackouts in Johannesburg be cut to two hours at a time to help businesses cope, spokesman Isaac Mangena said in an interview on Tuesday.

“What we are working on is a plan to cushion our customers from the frequency of load-shedding,” - Mangena said

Wasn't it originally Jo'burg that said they can't switch things on and off quickly enough, that's why they do 4 hours instead of 2 like everywhere else?

That's how Cape Town does it ... but then Cape Town is run by competent people.
No Cape Town has a dam that helps out, if the dam ain't there, you get the 4 hours everyone else does. Unless you're KZN

This was indeed the excuse, Eskom said enough with that, you will go 2 hours like everyone else. Initially it was met with great joy, until you realise 2 hours on stage 2 meant you could get 2 hour slots 6 hours apart, instead of 1 four session every so often, hell at stage 1 you could get days without a power interruption

I live in Johannesburg and we get 2.5 hour loadshedding slots. Where is it still 4 hours?

So your example illustrates my point, there are 2.5 hour slots. You have 4 slots, two 2.5 hour slots, and one for 4.5 hours because that's how Stage 5 and upwards works, at some point you run out of non-consecutive slots.

Stage 4:

Stage 5:

Stage 6:

The way that it has been worked out is actually not too bad, as long as one stands on the right side of stage 8, after that it's a bloodletting,

Here is a speculative stage 14, blue slots are speculative:

The only "Big Changes" would be if City Power could add more hours in a day. But I guess that the concept of finite resources is foreign to many in state jobs.
