JSE Historical Closing Data

I was looking for JSE historical closing data for a number of shares, preferably online via an API. Similar to what you can get via yahoo or Google fiance, but no luck for the JSE?

Looking a bit further i see that both yahoo & google support almost every exchange in world, except the JSE:

http://finance.yahoo.com/exchanges

Why is this? JSE so backward they are incapable of providing this info? Frankly I feel embarrassed to be a South African (its not like we live under stones down here).

Anyone know why this is so? Or know of any other way of getting this data dynamically (via an API)

have you tried sharenet or you can get a daily download from the jse for R180 a month.What is API?

I may not be able to help you, but I can offer a tip.
Go to www.investorchallenge.co.za, and look for a user called Patrick (you might need to register), he runs the site and loves playing with data, he might be able to point you in the right direction as to where he gets his data.

You can get the API via iNet or Bloomberg, but the subscription fees are pricey.

I can help you with the historical info in excel format if you want.

thanks VG008, i was not aware bloomberg api was free.

That will work, although the Yahoo/Google web services model would have been more convenient ...


Still somewhat bemused by why the JSE makes South Africans second class global citizens by not simply allowing google & yahoo to pull data feeds like virtually every other exchange in the world :wtf:

What if I don't want constantly updated data?

I'm just looking for the JSE All-share index value for further back into history. Most sites (Bloomberg, etc) only go back 5 years.

Where can I get the index value for 20 or 30 years of data?

Does anybody here maybe just have a copy of it?

If you go to the JSE website you can request historical data. You do have to pay for it though.
