Just got retrenched ):

lol. maintain a positive attitude and you will find things working out in your favour...as i said, i lost everything... not just my job. man i hit rock bottom... almost lost my home, it was month 3 in arrears... BUT it worked out... power of positive thinking... there is always a way out...

Sorry to hear.
I hope everything works out for the best for you

My contract ended 15 May 2010 and was unemployed for 2 months. I couldn't find any work and decided to accept an offer in PE, for the same company, for about R10K less per month than what I was earning with them a few months ago. If I didn't have any savings I would have been financially cripple by now. We had to pay relocation costs, rental deposits, etc and on top of it my wife is pregnant. Its going to be a tough few months for us and we are trying to stay positive.

Hi, I'm in Cape Town.

Those folkd who have been retrenched, how did you manage to stay afloat?

You know how many people I've heard about getting retrenched in Cape Town in the last three months? Think its time to start stressing! :(

How much exactly in relation to one's salary? Is it one months salary or........?

I think the least is 2 weeks for every year worked.

However it's all up to negotiations. Get a rep or join a union like Solidarity? I got WAAAAAAY more than 2 weeks per completed year.

The problem is that I have been here for les than a year so I'm entitled to about two weeks salary. I went from a company that was downsizing to this company due to promises that they were expanding, getting ready to explode, etc.

Ouch then that does get a bit nasty if you're there less than a year :(

I had 5 years at MTN though.

Get off the forum and start networking, pnet, Career Junction, etc.

Get a few recruitment agents on your case.

There is work. Just need to find it. Good luck!

Thanks for the kick in the butt. I am getting things in motion though. Sometimes you just need to talk about things with people who aren't going to get too overbearing about it.

Honestly mate. It's all about the attitude. If you feel gutted and floored then you will end-up like that. Just be possitive. It will work out best in the end ;)

Make sure that they followed the letter of the law regarding your retrenchment (if they didn't run to the ccma as fast as you can). Know your rights as a worker.

Access bond. Its an extra option you negotiate with your bank if you have a mortgage. Basically its paying off your mortgage in reverse: You get cash & the mortgage amount owing goes up. Not ideal financially, but in practice it works to solve the immediate problem.

Secondly, cut the non-essential expenses. Right now, not next month. Stuff like DSTV, take-aways etc. It buys valuable breathing room.

Also, keep a decent amount of cash on hand if you are starting to max out available borrowing capacity so that you have a set amount available that can be spent in an emergency without consulting your bank manager. Just resist the temptation to buy something flashy with it.

The above is extreme, and perhaps not relevant for you right now, so chin up. I've seen people recover from overnight multi-million knocks & have most of their net worth wiped and still pull through by sheer power of will, so its very do-able.
