The OP said the letter was regarding defamation not slander.

Defamation is the South African concept of slander. The use of slander jargon originates from the US. Let's stick to defamation.

deleted at request of OP

What advice are you looking for? The fact that you are complying, have indicated your intention to comply and acknowledge that the statements were made in a different frame of mind indicates that you yourself believe the statements went too far.

If so, err on the side of caution and comply. You have already indicated that the deadline set by the other lawyer is too short. I would respond more formally on paper requesting an extension because the date was set arbitrarily without context of the effort it would make to ensure strict compliance with the letter. I would state the number of tweets, facebook posts etc required to be reviewed by yourself. Lastly, I would record in writing that even if you miss the deadline (which you reject as being arbitrary), you will ensure that any defamatory content is removed as soon as possible thereafter, in any event before the date that any trial or application would be heard.

I don't really use Facebook, but can't you set all your messages to private so that only friends can see them? Then you should be able to delete them at your leisure?

Dude, why go on a social media rampage against someone? It's super passive-aggressive.
If you want to confront/have it out with someone, do it in person. Why subject everyone else to your issues?

OP has already said he did at a time when he wasn't thinking clearly. The logical and rational person was absent during this time.

The statements will still be on the interwebz, You cant remove your FB profile, its there forever.

And this is the reason I do not use Facebook. Twitter is for the isolated tweet. And this is the only other forum I am reasonably active. I prefer not to play the man, but rather the ball. It is just not worth defamation, slander or anything of the sort wherein you lose your sanity.

the key issues are not set out in the OP:
did you make any defamatory statements - do your comments cause a reasonable person to think less of the other person (not the standard, but a starting point)?

Defamation really is an area of law where the plaintiff has a hard time so I wouldn't roll over on a receipt of a lawyer letter unless there is more to the story.

Does the demand claim damages of any sort or simply the removal of content?

quote removed, as same deleted in OP

Yip, well it seems he made a mistake by asking for advice here in any case, seeing that he has deleted his question and all his posts, and asking everyone to delete his question.

And yes, social media comments can be held against you, look at the Oscar tweet about coming home and finding the washing machine on. He deleted it but it came back to bite him in the bum.

Delete the comments or suspend the account (not delete). Ignore the lawyers who tend to exaggerate everything. To bring a case in the High Court is mega-expensive, so I doubt they will do it.

you could say "sure, please request links from your client for the relavent social media postings, then I will ensure they are all removed. I do have a number of online posts on FB, twitter,....., this would make it difficult for me to search for every, and all postings your client finds offensive."
