From other sites:
"BitTorrent is a P2P file swarming application. This means that as soon as you have downloaded a few chunks of a file it will start uploading it to others, thereby spreading the file better."

"BitTorrent is a peer-to-peer protocol for distributing files. It makes use of the upstream bandwidth of every downloader to increase the effectiveness of the distribution as a whole, and to gain advantage on the part of the downloader. On average, the faster you upload to your peers, the faster you will be able to download"

or from the FAQ "What is BitTorrent uploading from my machine?
"Pieces of the file you're currently downloading. BitTorrent trades pieces you have with pieces your peers have."

Its simple. Bittorrent is faster due to threading. Each connection is also only getting 2-4KB/sec but when you add them it goes up to say 14KB/sec. A normal http download will typically not go above 5KB/sec (ask TheRoDenT about his downloads from tucows.is.co.za). For some fscked up reason, Sentechs mywireless cant go fast on a single thread.

It could also be due to Sentech splitting traffic by port and allocating bandwidth to each port and thus the normal http port (80) is congested while 6888 etc are less congested. This is highly unlikely but its anybody's guess how they are "controlling" the bandwidth.

Basically what greedyfly said [;)]

I have noticed the same thing. A single thread never goes above 6KB or so.

The way around this is to use a program like Flashget or Getright that can open multiple threads to the same file. Open up 5 threads, each one pulling down 5KB and you have your 20KB download speed.

This does not help for something like windows update of course [:(]

Single connection backing off (ie never reaching full speed) might have something to do with the packet losses on the network.

Basically, if a packet is not indicated as delivered the network thinks things are too congested to the user and slows down the transmissions... over time it then tries to increase speed again but backs off as soon as packets dissapear again...
