The Prius was thrashed around the track as fast as it could go. The M3 was cruising around *relatively* slowly (i.e. at the Prius' pace) so it's engine was hardly having to work at all. Stupid comparison.

If you heard what clarkson said afterwards, fuel consumptions is down to drivers style, so i guess it was a good comparison if you look at it from that point :)

I loved the Topgear episode where they showed the Prius and M3 going around their track at the same speed (fast for Prius, slow for M3) and then showed that the M3 was more fuel efficient at that speed than the Prius is. Just goes to show how important driving style is when it comes to fuel economy.

Yeah driving style makes a huge difference, but if you drive a Prius like it was intended to be driven you can expect to routinely get 5.0l/100km and if you drive it carefully you can get below 4.0l/100km. It's not like the hybrid technology doesn't work.

Fair enough.

What about diesels?

As far as I'm aware, Prius 3 is the most fuel efficient car in SA, including diesels. Added to that, it doesn't emit all that other nasty stuff like NOx that diesels do.

Bit of thread necromancy - I see CAR mag gave it a 17/20. See, even dyed-in-the-wool petrolheads are liking the new Prius. (Thinks about how I can afford a R320k car).

The Prius was a good start for hybrids but even the newer version of HSD does not provide for a long enough ZEV range. This is where plug-in hybrids become a more attractive offering. Although with the General stuffing up nicely and the Russians&Canadians taking over Opel I doubt we will see the Chevy Volt or Opel Ampera any time soon.
